Lan caster Holstein Show crowns two veteran families

At the Lancaster District Holstein Show more than 120 cattle competed with the Robert Kauffman family of Elizabethtown winning grand and reserve grand championships. The Frey family of Willow Street earned multiple blue ribbons and premier breeder honors as Open Black and White judging extended over five hours.

Yield grades explained by Penn State and USDA officials

About 200 people attended an open meeting at the Lancaster auction barn to learn yield grades. Speakers included H Louis Moore, Lester Burdette, Milton Marshall, James Anderson, and Max Smith. Moore traced the yield grading system adopted February 23 1976 and discussed whether lower graded cattle have no value, with demonstrations of cattle grading at the event.

Strauss tops hog show at Lancaster fair

Robert Strauss Jr of Ephrata bought a feeder pig for 107 dollars in April and won grand champion at the Lancaster County FFA Market Hog Show and Sale at the Lancaster Stockyards. His 215 pound Duroc-Wy edge out the lightweight champion, selling to Hatfield Packing for 2.37 per pound. Reserve grand champion Christian Herr, Narvon, earned 1.30 per pound for his 205 pound Yorkshire-Hampshire. Herr bought his animal at the same April sale. Lancaster County Farm Restaurant bought Herr’s reserve.

Tobacco cutting starts in Lancaster County amid variable weather

Weather variations across Lancaster County place the tobacco crop at different stages of growth while the overall season runs about a week early. Pennstate expert John Yotum notes aphids appear but are not severe and Pennlan shows strong performance versus Pembel at this stage. By Friday morning three growers reported cutting had begun including Paul Groff of Manheim R3 who expects to harvest despite upcoming bad weather and who notes Pembel on seven acres yields about 60 pounds per latch.
