Maple Springs Farm owner David Breckbill raises 18 cows on a 25 acre Lancaster RZ property. The Breckbill family, rooted in Hans Herr lineage, maintains grainless hay needs with silage and green chop, buying little hay for two years while four sons and two daughters start families nearby.
County Holstein breeders schedule a spring tour next Wednesday visiting Glatfelter Paper mill in Spring Grove York County. The group will then travel to Monacoy farms where Ray Smith and son participate with the dairy operation.
The Southeast Regional Silo Clinic will be held April 18 in Room A at Allentown’s Lehigh Valley Farmers' Cooperative. Experts led by Dr John Bratzler A R Carlson Fred A Hughes and John E Baylor will discuss silo types care and economics. A farm tour showcases Holsteins Kingstead and Rolling Knoll herds with butterfat records and large cow herds. A bus departs 825 East Chestnut Street Lancaster at 7 a m on April 19.
Iron Grange Number 66 goes on record opposing controls on insect sprays for crops. The resolution denounces adverse publicity and calls for the removal of such controls. It notes no illness or disease traced to heptachlor or other chemicals used for insect damage and argues controls were not intended to protect public health.
A Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service briefing says this hard winter hit fruit growers, with peach trees damaged by cold and rodents severe on young trees. Winter grains showed little damage, alfalfa heaved locally, and pasture grasses are just turning green as field work lags, with limited cultivation and delayed planting across the state.
Amos Funk of the Lancaster County Soil Conservation District urges farmers to stop plowing to highway edges. He calls the practice dangerous as slow tractors turn around on roads and notes a joint campaign with the Pennsylvania Department of Highways to curb it.
The outlook calls for near normal temperatures around 41 degrees at night and 62 during the day. Expect a warm spell Monday followed by cooler conditions Tuesday and Wednesday. Precipitation may total over a half inch, possibly late Saturday and again later in the period. Past 15 days have run below normal.
