Wallace and Ryan push plan to curb copper thefts statewide
Assemblymember Monica Wallace and Senator Sean Ryan led a press conference at Niagara Metals in Cheektowaga to unveil legislation to deter catalytic converter and copper theft. The bill would require serial numbers on converters and tougher recycling facility standards, with penalties for noncompliance and a system to track resellers. Law enforcement and ReMa support highlight rising theft losses and a surge in catalytic converter theft. The ReMay ScrapTheftAlert system has recovered $3.5 million in stolen metal.
