The Country Editor notes a Hollywood youngster proud to have the most parents at PTA, then covers Stephen Henry receiving a “friend” trophy at the 4-H Horse Club awards barbecue. The harvest of items moves from school pride to local sports and elections across the week.
The 4-H Horse Club closed its season with nearly 50 trophies awarded at the annual awards barbecue. Paige Echols won grand champion gelding for Big Skip Leo, with Dianne Woodul reserve. Clinton Stafford claimed grand champion mare on Vella Dos, and Renee Robinette earned reserve with Skip-4-bar Delight. Ray Bennett led the senior all around, Kelli Youngblood led the junior, with several other riders highlighted in poles, barrels, and reining events.
Robinson Hogg Cannady and Bedwell return as starters for coach Robert James leading the Golden Tornadoes in a 1972 opener at New Mexico. Key backs Hogg Bedwell Cannady Melvin Robinson plus line anchors Duncan Laughlin Kilgore Wilkerson Kilgore Kilgore provide the offense and defense as James plans heavy playing time for many players.
Martin Y. Guerro a 23 year old Lamesa brick mason is charged with murder with malice in the shooting death of Antonio Rodriguez 35 after an argument at 308 North Elgin. Police Chief J P Robo and Captain William Shankles made the arrest around 2 20 p m Tuesday following a Saturday night incident. One shot pierced the front window and another struck Rodriguez during a private residence dispute. See murder page.
Local Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau warn residents to scrutinize multiple level marketing plans and investment opportunities. The alert urges contacting the chamber for guidance while noting some promoters seek easy profits.
The Dawson County Polo Association won its third consecutive World Polo Championship at San Angelo, defeating San Jacinto of Houston in a close final. The team earned the M. L. Leddy Memorial Trophy to keep permanently, with all members receiving plaques. Notable players include Wayne Brantley, Troy Howard, James Howard, Gary Jones, Frank McCasland, Junior Howard, Jack Young, Eddie Nichols, Jim Boydston, Red Clifford Jones, Mike Devine, and Billy Addison. Troy Howard and Gary Jones earned All-Star honors.
Lamesa Public School students will be dismissed at 2 p.m. Friday to allow buses to complete routes and transport band and football players to Clovis for Lamesa High’s season opener. The Friday game at 7 30 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time equals 8 30 p.m. Lamesa time. Bus routes remain on schedule with adjusted loading times.
