12th man call echoes in Lamesa Clovis opener

In a Friday night football clash at Williams Stadium the Lamesa Golden Tornadoes defeated Clovis 22 21 as a late 12th man flag nullified a Wildcats recovery and preserved Lamesa s lead. A rough start plus bus delays failed to dim Lamesa s comeback spirit as Jerry Lambright returned a Wildcat fumble to kill another drive.

First bale opens fall cotton season in county

The countryside marked the start of harvest as Charlie King and Carson Echols tossed the first bale on the courthouse lawn, signaling the opening of the fall season amid hot weather and late heavy rains. Despite 2 inch downpours and lightning, no major crop damage was reported and Patricia Gin claimed a repeat as number one.

Membership Drive Slated by Chamber of Commerce

A one week membership campaign begins next Wednesday September 13 led by four team captains Olan Graves Charles Hardage John Hegi and Joe Coffey. Thirty volunteers coordinate the drive with 150 prospects provided and letters mailed. Winners receive trophies while losers may face an undisclosed incentive.

Dawson County Fair Honors First Bale of Cotton

Charlie King receives a $259 premium from the Lamesa Chamber of Commerce for Dawson County’s first bale of cotton this year. The 44 pound bale, grown on King Farms near Lamesa, was ginned at Patricia Gin Inc. and came from 11 acres planted April 16 with Brightmaster 4-5 seed. Ginners Joe Garcia and Lalo Lopez helped as five hands picked roughly two days to gather the bale. This is King’s fourth year attempting the first bale and Patricia Gin’s second consecutive first bale in the county.

Dawson County Fair Exhibits To Be In Place By 9 A M

The Dawson County Fair opens Wednesday and runs through Saturday with record entries and new events. Highlights include Open Horse Show with adult and junior divisions, Children s Barnyard, plus art, flower, and women s division exhibits. Entries in livestock and poultry start Tuesday. judging occurs across several times.

United Way Announces 1972 Division Chairmen

United Way plans progress as division chairmen are named for the 1972 campaign led by President Fred Barrington and Campaign Chairman Don Bristow. Key chairs include John Palmore advance division, Bill Gerber school, Ruben Rush special, Dorothy Haney general, Stansell Clement mail, Jess Stephens and Max Sellers town and country co chairs, Jerry Bell commercial, plus others for arrangements auditing and youth telethon duties. The Dawson County goal is set at 36,320, down from 47,500, with Salvation Army and Red Cross asked to run separate drives for 1972-73 funds. more workers will be announced on page 2.

Telephone Service Numbers Changing In Lamesa

G T Hamilton of General Telephone announces changes to dial numbers for Lamesa. Starting September 12 the directory assistance becomes 411 and repair service becomes 4102. Party line dialing requires 4104 plus the seven digit number. These changes prevent conflicts with direct distance dialing planned for December.

Ray Don Britt Dies In Plane Electrocution Accident

A fun morning ended in tragedy when a model airplane entangled in overhead lines electrocuted Ray Don Britt, 17, at 11 40 a m near Plains Fairway Golf Course. Witnesses named Louis Alexander and Brenda. The lines reportedly carried 7 200 volts and burned the wires and wet grass where Britt stood. Funeral plans were not available at press time.

Nixon Leads Nixon McGovern 124 10 In Lamesa Poll

A cross section of Dawson County residents favored Nixon 124 to 10 in a straw ballot conducted by the Press Reporter this week. Optimist Kiwanis Noon Lions Rotary groups each polled hewing to the president with large margins. One undecided and two write in Wallace noted. A follow up ballot is planned around October 10 to track shifts.
