The LVN training program at Howard College Lamesa Campus moves start from August 3 to August 17 to attract more applicants. Monday is final registration day with a 5 dollar fee to take a four hour pre entrance test at 8 am on the Lubbock highway campus. The program, now in its second year, fears collapse from low enrollment as only 28 placed exams have been taken, far below last year’s 35 applicants and nine qualifiers.

Russel Skiles has been named news editor of the Lamesa Press-Reporter, replacing Bob Bucker who moves to the Andrews County News. A Langtry native and 1975 Comstock High School graduate, Skiles earned a BA in Journalism from Angelo State University and joined the Press-Reporter staff in March 1980 after an internship at the Del Rio News-Herald and required work at San Angelo.

A Midland man and his wife, 24 year old Gary Don Davis and 22 year old Debra Kay Davis, were arrested around 4 a.m. Friday after a citizen reported a burglary in progress at Quick-N-Easy on North Bryan Avenue. A pistol was found with Mrs. Davis and a sledge hammer was used to breach a rear wall. Police tie the pair to multiple burglaries across five counties, including a Jackson Brothers Finn break-in.
Dawson County commissioners plan a session Monday to debate a city proposal charging $751.50 per fire call outside the city in 1982, a rise from the current flat $350. They will also hold a 2 p.m. public hearing on 1980 census based precinct boundaries, with comment invited, and discuss $6,250 local funds toward a $37,000 airport grant match.
A public hearing on Dawson County's tax rate is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday in the District Courtroom of the courthouse. Commissioners proposed a 32 cent tax rate to fund a record county budget, driven by property value increases after state reform laws requiring 100 percent market value assessment. Total assessed value climbs from 83.6 million to over 490 million, with about 350 million attributed to all property, over 70 percent of the county's total value. The new rate represents a notable increase over last year.
