Grand jury indicts nine with two plead guilty
A 106th District Court grand jury indicted nine people at a Monday session and sealed indictments against seven others. Two defendants pleaded guilty soon after and received probated five year terms. Placido Barrientez admitted aggravated robbery and was fined $500 plus $166 costs and restitution, while Gloria Beatty pleaded guilty to forgery by passing.

Local scouts praised for lifesaving at summer camp hike
Four members of Troop 708 Lamesa Wayne Holt Brent Turney Richard Smith and Assistant Scoutmaster Paul Wade are recommended for the Medal of Merit for lifesaving actions during a July 8 rescue near Tres Ritos New Mexico. They saved 12 year old Todd Adams of Lubbock during a 14 mile climb to 13 500 foot Hickorita Peak as 35 scouts from ten troops participated. The group hiked with full gear the Scoutmaster Charles Warner noted the boys were prepared for anything.

Seven arrested in drug raid in Lamesa
A six month drug probe ended Monday with seven Lamesa residents – six men and one woman – seized on unlawful delivery charges. Indictments allege sale of phenmetrazine to federal agents on three occasions in late May and June. Bonds set at 50,000 per count. three suspects released, four held. Police, sheriff, highway patrol and DEA swarmed the scene near 12th Street and Akron, with a search at 1506 South Boston uncovering pills, marijuana, and cash.
