Dawson County News Highlights Community Aid and Weather

In Dawson County Texas 1971 saw high cotton trailer registrations and a big Kiwanis Pancake Supper set for February at the High School. The community helped James Crow with medical expenses after his artery transplant in Lubbock. A trio of recent accidents prompted neighborly aid as harvest crews moved trailers to the gin. A cold snap with snow and freezing temperatures slowed harvests and caused minor wrecks.

Farm accident costs limb of local pastor in Dawson County

Moody Smith a Dawson County minister and Klondike Baptist pastor was badly injured while using a cotton stripper on the Ervin Boff farm near Patricia. His right arm was amputated after the machine jammed and pulled him in. This follows two other farm incidents in the county including a fatality near Higginbotham and a severe injury in Midway.

Burkett Youth Suffers Critical Burns In Farm Accident

A 17 year old Dawson County farm boy Randy Burkett was badly burned when a mechanical cotton picker contacted high voltage lines while near his Midway home. Surgeons removed both feet above the ankles and the left arm as he remained in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock after transfer from Medical Arts Hospital. The accident occurred about 10 30 a m Friday while the boy helped his father harvest cotton. An elderly laborer and the father aided in freeing him as power lines caused the injuries. The Burkett family farms about 960 acres in Key Midway with a large harvest underway and community volunteers assisted in picking and ginning efforts.

New Year Baby Timothy Don Born to Rickmans

The first baby of 1972 in town is Timothy Don, a ten pound two and a half ounce boy born at 12 34 a.m. Saturday at Medical Arts Hospital to Mr and Mrs Jackie Rickman of 519 N. 10th.

Lamesa Council OKs Charter Amendments After Canvass

City council canvassed results of a Dec 28 special amendment election with 777 votes, approving amendments two through seven and defeating one nine and eight balancing annexation and tax rate changes. Ordinance ordering amendments into effect passed on first reading.

County Wide Meet To Explain 1972 Cotton and Feed Programs

A county meeting to explain the 1972 Cotton and Feed Grain programs is set for 2 p.m. January 11 in the District Court Room. Eddie Brown and Lee Roy Colgan note 1972 allotments mirror 1971. subsidy checks likely similar despite lower cotton yields. Cotton notices total 149 425 acres. feed grain allotment is 242 307 acres with weak Dawson County participation.

LHS Singers Join All-Region Choir in Midland

Fourteen members of Lamesa High School Golden Tor Choral will perform with the All-Region Choir in Midland at 7 30 p m Saturday at Midland Lee High School. Seven of the group will seek All-Area honors Friday as the next step toward All-State selection.

Lamesa Cotton Classing Office Reaches Fifteen Years

The Lamesa U.S.D.A. Cotton Classing Office on North 22nd Street marks its 15th year as a key regional substation serving Dawson County and adjacent areas. Under J A Dedear, the office classed 88 360 samples with about 10 000 backlog, and employs 37 people to process up to 6 000 samples daily during the cotton harvest season.
