A 60-cent per bale fee for cotton classing services was announced by the U S Department of Agriculture to take effect Oct 1. Local offices will handle billing, with options including gin collection to ease producer charges, though more staff will be needed.
The first bale of cotton on the South Plains came from Gaines County and was grown by S.L. Stephens Jr. of Lamesa. Mesa Gin near the Gaines‑Dawson line ginned a 475‑pound bale from 50 acres of late April planted cotton, yielding 940 pounds of seed and 1,740 pounds of total seed cotton. Managers and ginners are named, with display at Seminole State Bank and storage planned at ae Industries in Lovington, New Mexico.
Eight shots were fired into the Bumblee game room in the 400 block of 4th late Sunday night after a dispute at the business. No one injured. Juan Molina Garcia, 28, was arrested by DPS officers carrying a .38 caliber pistol and charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon and public intoxication. He posted a $158 fine and was released from county jail. The shooting occurred about 11:25 p.m. and several bullets went through walls. Juan and his brother Martin Garcia were involved in an earlier altercation. police recovered several slugs from walls. A separate arrest, Mike Joe Villanueva, 21, faces public intoxication and carrying a prohibited weapon after a Sunday morning stop.

Howard College Lamesa Campus keeps registration open for fall classes as enrollments reach a peak across six established courses totaling 104 students. Campus secretary Jodie Furlow notes over 150 may be enrolled when all registered classes are counted, with three courses still short of ten students to form full classes. Fall offerings include History of the U.S. to 1876, Freshman Composition, Elementary and Intermediate Typing, Applied Accounting I, and Conversational Spanish, while six courses did not attract enough students. Classes run from Monday through December 11 at the Lamesa site on the Lubbock highway.
County commissioners may reopen talks on the disputed fire contract after Monday’s meeting. Commissioner J E Airhart, with consent of the board, asked County Judge Leslie Pratt to approach city officials about resuming discussions. The one year contract expires year end and discussions were tabled in late July with only Commissioner Kenneth Pearson opposing.
