On the first day of classes in Lamesa, total enrollment reached 2,823 students, up from 2,785 at the start last year. Superintendent Neal Chastain calls the rise expected yet surprising after years of declines and expects additional students over the coming weeks.

Dennis Wellington 18 is also charged with burglary and resisting arrest. he fought officers and had stolen car keys on arrest. Efrin Bara Holguin 25 is also charged with aggravated assault and public intoxication. he kicked an officer during arrest and faces probation revocation. An assault warrant targets Sherbert Edwards for striking a man with a chair at Earl Scott's Cafe.
The Dawson County farm tour heads north from Lamesa Thursday with six demonstrations at farms including Weldon Shelton Rex Drennan and D.W. Phipps. Starting 1 p.m. at Forrest Park Community Center the program features dryland and irrigated cotton variety demonstrations, fertility and nematode studies, with experts Dr. Calvin Orr Dr. John Ganoway and Dr. James Touraap as guest speakers.
Lamesa's Golden Tornadoes kick off the 1981 season Thursday at 7:30 against Lubbock High at Lowery Field in a game many expect to test the Tors' new offensive line. Coach Jim Warren oversees a unit buoyed by size and strength as Rusty Ratliff and Steve Teague anchor the interior, with cautious optimism about a potentially improved squad.
The Lamesa school system and many local offices will close Monday in recognition of Labor Day while many businesses stay open. Students will have an early dismissal Friday after the first week of school before the three day weekend.
