The City of Lamesa and Dawson County received a quarterly revenue sharing check totaling 771,125. The city received 934,312 and the county 942,813. Funds fund city equipment and county permanent improvements, with the program set to run five years.
Meridian Oil Corp of San Antonio reports completion of No 1 Smith as a half mile extension to Dean production in Dawson County Tex Hammon field twelve miles south of Lames. The well is expected to pump about 105 barrels of 36 degree API oil per day with ten barrels of water and a gas oil ratio of 4291. See oil page 2.
Lamesa elections drew 833 voters in a near record turnout. Dr. David Smiley won reentry with 580 votes. Wendell Strahan led with 659, Ed Fulbright 646, while Don Bethel 221 and Gary Laughlin 213 trailed. In Sands, Blagraves 51 and Martin 62 led incumbents for the school board slots. Eddie Herm 53 votes earned the third seat. Write ins and council results noted.
Contracts assure opening of a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Lamesa with J D Williams handling details for a 1950 square foot hut at North 4th and Dallas Ave. Terry, who operates franchises in Big Spring and Snyder, will run the Lamesa facility as a third hometown dining spot. Construction, including paving a 22,000 square foot lot, is set to begin after dirt work this week, with total cost about 44 150 dollars and a 90 day completion target.
Jeanette Summers and Van Gentry topped the Optimist Oratorical Contest Tuesday night in the annual event. The girls division awarded Summers first, Napper second, and Slover as runner-up, while Gentry led the boys with Gleghorn second and Nix as runner-up. Other girls contestants included Donna Hay and Rebecca Schneweis.
Lamesa Golden Tornado volleyballers head to Lubbock Saturday for regional playoffs at Texas Tech Gym. A pep rally is set for Friday at 1 30 p m in the high school gym to boost the team before the first AAA conference round Saturday noon Dumas versus Seminole then Lamesa versus Graham at 1 p m finals 4 p m all games in Lubbock with 1 50 admission Coach Browning also notes a Thursday 7 p m warm up against Denver City in the Tor gym.
Area loses at least 27000 this summer and up to half a million dollars regionwide as of May 19 with the Permian Basin Neighborhood Youth Corp ending. The Nixon era budget squeeze ends federally funded part time jobs for about 740 high school students and 125 in school and out of school workers. NYC directors cite the in school program keeping students in class while gaining on the job training. The conclusion ends jobs of Hal Boyd Kenneth Hamilton Jane Crownover and Bret Snyder and ends an operation that helped many earn GEDs or finish high school. The rural Texas impact reflects broader federal cutbacks amid a tightening economy and education process.
Ricky L. Palmer has been elected Assistant Vice-President of The First National Bank of Lamesa. He will begin April 23 and work mainly in the Agricultural Loan Department. Palmer currently serves as acting County Supervisor of the Farmer's Home Administration in Martin County and has two years with the agency, much of it in the Lamesa office as Assistant County Supervisor.
