A railroad car carrying 30 Japanese railroad employees spent a month near Weatherby and Huntington for drill exercises. When moved to Las Grande, a pocket in the outfit car revealed wooden guns, swords, plans, and maps, suggesting a organized drill or training activity during Sciances month.
In the yard pocket a dispute erupts when two men open a car pocket left on the tracks. Japs, idling nearby, rush the men and slam the door, insisting there are no tools inside while white men explain they seek heat tools. The scene ends with the men departing.
Salem judge George H. Burnett will not permit his name to be used for the Oregon United States district attorney post. Oregon delegates at Washington reportedly favor John H. Mellary, a Marion County district attorney, as a candidate acceptable to both President Roosevelt and Prosecutor Heney McNary.
