Bellingham August 1 The Todds of Washington collect data and prepare for a legal fight over public service corporation assessments. They claim the proposed raise is inequitable and plan to testify in court as legal steps begin.
The State Tax Commissioner Frost is under scrutiny as reports claim Northern Pacific and Great Northern lines have staff across the state gathering property value figures from experts who may testify in court. A devastating fire in Island City's business district caused estimated losses of about $120,000. The blaze started in W. C. Perry's general store and swept along Manin Street, destroying the Pioneer Flour Mill, M. & M. implement house, and multiple shops. Fire units from La Grande assisted as water access failed, with extensive damage to mills, stock, and homes.
