Early reports tally 235 dead with 40 towns destroyed across Louisiana Mississippi Alabama and Georgia. The twin tornadoes left massive ruin from Purvis Mississippi to Griffin Georgia and triggered widespread injuries and housing shortages as hospitals filled and relief efforts began.
Tacoma April 25 announcement that Pacific Southeastern will build a new railroad with Tacoma as terminus and 600 acres secured for yards. The line will tap Walla Walla North Yakima and Spokane with capital stock set at 15 million dollars. Incorporators include Charles Lathrop T H Hubbard and George Crocker longtime Southern Pacific backers.
Washington April 25 President Roosevelt failed to win senate support to amend the naval appropriation bill to fund four battleships instead of two. Senator Piles from Washington saw his amendment defeated but later the senate granted reconsideration.
All but one room in the Grande Ronde hospital are occupied. Four patients improve in the wards including Mrs Oscar Cloewen who will soon return home and J N Ferguson who is much better. Johnnie Grout is doing well and Ada West is expected to be able to eat again Sunday.
After a week in Los Angeles the Atlantic fleet sailed for Santa Barbara with large crowds watching. The fleet signaled farewell at 9 am, flying colors as it cleared the harbor. Expected arrival in Santa Barbara by 4 pm. Separately, New Jersey leans toward unpledged delegates to Denver amid Democratic and Republican conventions and a split in Alabama’s Davidson Roosevelts faction.
