A public safety incident in Mississippi escalates as two Black suspects run amuck. Four White and seven Black individuals are fatally injured. militia intervention averts broader violence.
In Harriston Mississippi state troops quell a race inspired terror after Walter and Will Jones go on a deadly shooting spree. Eleven killed including Sheriff Hammett and conductor E B Appleby. sixteen injured. Lynching follows as Walter Jones is killed and Will Jones wounded. The violence spurs ongoing investigation and patrols.
Yesterday's highs reached 69 and lows 54 with .02 inches precast for La Crosse area. Unsettled conditions expected tonight into Tuesday with light showers and little temperature change. winds variable to moderate across Wisconsin Iowa Minnesota.
Governor F E McGovern appoints Colonel Orlando Holway of Merrillan as Adjutant General of the Wisconsin National Guard replacing General Boardman. Holway, senior officer and Third Regiment commander since 1899, will earn 2000 dollars yearly. Also named surgeon general is Dr Gilbert E Seaman of Milwaukee succeeding E H Grannis.
Rev Henry Faville bids farewell after twenty five years as pastor before about two hundred attendees. He spoke on The Mission of the Congregational Church in Wisconsin and praised future plans and the church’s work in the state. Tears and handshakes followed as he blessed his flock. He later spoke at La Crosse county poor farm for the W C T U with fifty five inmates present before soon leaving for Lake Mills Wisconsin to live in the Faville house once a family home.
Indianapolis plans extensive tribute for James Whitcomb Riley on his sixty first birthday October 7. A poetry shower by state children and a parade of local and visiting school groups are scheduled as part of the celebration.
Word from Washington states the interstate commerce commission ordered suspended until April 3, 1914, the proposed rate hike on car lots of paper to western points.
A telephone message from Oskaloosa reports Major John A. Lacey, congressman from Iowa's sixth district, collapsed and died there this afternoon.

William H. Allison the divorced husband of Mildred Allison Rexroat testified he had no knowledge of the murder near Wayne, Illinois. Everett Rexroat, Macomb farmer and Mrs Allison Rexroat’s husband, is charged with the killing and claimed he was over 200 miles away. The inquest heard how the victim was found beside railroad tracks and details of Allison’s movements in Joliet and nearby towns as authorities pursue suspects.

Two masked men bound and gagged John O'Brien, the night watchman at David Berg & Co. sausage factory, 449 West 37th Street, early today and emptied the safe taking about $100.
Miss Tillie Leminth, cashier of a Chicago restaurant, fought two holdup men in a tense early morning clash to defend the cash register. She was stabbed in the arm, fainted, and the pair escaped with $25.
Ole Nestinger, a well known city figure, was committed to the county poor farm for the winter after a court petition by guardian Jas Thomson. He refuses dividends for personal use and spends money on drink, has frequent court appearances, and was previously jailed for 30 days. He is to pay for his board at the farm.
Torrential rains swelled small streams in South Louisiana forcing three rail lines to suspend operations. Kansas City Southern, Lake Charles & Northern, and Lake Arthur branch of the Southern Pacific have halted service while Southern Pacific and St. Louis Iron Mountain Southern lines face threats.
John F. O Malley a former democratic state senator and Sullivan adherent won seven thousand five hundred dollars in a libel suit against Illinois Printing and Publishing Company publishers of the Hearst papers. The verdict covers an alleged libel in the Chicago Examiner dated November 24 1911 which called O Malley the Gambling King of Chicago.
Washington congressmen announced they urged President Wilson to grant immediate pardons to J. H. Bullock and C. E. Houston who were sentenced in Seattle for fraud in government coal contracts. They said the pardon attorney for the Department of Justice believed the men are innocent.
Miss Eda Lorst seventeen? sixteen? was killed instantly when a shotgun her brother Charles Lorst was cleaning discharged. He closed the gun after oiling the trigger spring triggering the fatal blast. The tragedy occurred Sunday night in Sheboygan Wisconsin.
In New York on September 29 M Rosenheim threw nitric acid at Frances Fretz after she refused his marriage proposal. Dozen passengers were burned including Gustav Jacobson who was hospitalized alongside Miss Fretz. her prognosis remained unclear.
In Diedenhofen Germany on September 29 Lieut Tiezge an artillery officer shot and killed Ensign Foerster after a dispute over Foersters remonstrance during a religious service. Tiege had been acquitted by court martial of disturbing a service and celebrated with drink before the fatal shooting.
One hundred fifty members of the Wisconsin Master Bakers association gathered in Green Bay for the ninth annual convention. The sessions will continue through Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Wisconsin lawmakers including Senator Robert M. La Follette and Representative John J. Esch endorse the U.S. purchasing and erecting embassies abroad for diplomats. Letters from La Crosse board of trade and other congressmen cite appropriations already made for Bangkok Constantinople Pekin and Tokyo totaling 150000. Esch notes further spending by Brazil and European powers and says the movement will be pushed in Congress. The Wilson Underwood Simmons tariff conference report, 12000 words with a 3000 word Underground statement, was presented to the House at noon after Democratic and minority conferees adopted it by party vote. The report nets broad duty changes including free lists for cement asphalt limestone cattle eggs and wool, higher zinc, and a new income tax structure with higher rates for large incomes. Senator La Follette criticized not being admitted to conferences and did not sign the report.
Attorneys advise the chief that conferences of high officials are fruitless and may amount to a virtual surrender. The matter will be referred to the commission for action.
