A county board committee urged cost savings by a sliding scale for prisoner board payments to Sheriff Lampoon. The 5 member investigators claimed potential annual savings of 1,361.39 and presented monthly figures showing higher costs under current rates versus a per prisoner daily rate linked to inmate count. The proposal, debated by the board, was ordered held over for 30 days with a 19 to 16 vote.
Adm. Forrest Sherman announced indefinitely furloughing Capt. John G. Crommelin at half pay for continued disobedience to orders and public criticism of defense leadership. The action, effective April 1, marks involuntary retirement for the 47 year old naval veteran who accused army and air force staffs of weakening the Navy.

La Crosse's common council was reminded it must cover its share of the new administration building for the airport development project. The state aeronautics commission will seek about 62,500 within two or three months. City funds could come from the surplus or bond financing for 60,000 with the rest from surplus.
Milwaukee police investigated the loss of a black 18 by 12 inch bag containing 39500 dollars in cash and 135184 dollars in checks. The bag vanished after Elmer Jennerjahn and Armin Schmidt parked a car near the First National Bank and then moved to retrieve papers. Jennerjahn, a 53 year old former police officer, and Schmidt, 35, worked as bank messengers.
Jose Villalobos a 24 year old Mexican national was arrested Thursday in the slaying of Sheriff O W Morrow of New Mexico Deputy Sheriff Mack Terwa ter said the man fired four shots during a fight using the sheriff s gun The killing happened early Sunday on a mountain road north of Presidió Villalobos was captured 70 miles southwest of here in Mexico He had cuts and bruises from brush and his shoes were worn out
Britain's DeHavilland Comet made the first jet airliner flight from London to Rome in two hours and two minutes. It served as a speed and fuel test. The four jet passenger plane was piloted by Villands J Cunningham.
The county board discussed a resolution to define the chairman as part time with office hours in the courthouse on Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon after the April meeting. A separate measure calls for a master survey of school districts near La Crosse to aid county plan development by July 1951 with costs between 2500 and 5000 dollars, sharing by city and county. The board will also consider joining unemployment insurance with Schroeder proposing exempting annual employees from benefits, mainly affecting hourly highway workers.
The Senate defeated President Truman's middle income housing program on a 43 to 38 vote, removing it from a catch-all housing bill. Republicans and Southern Democrats joined to kill the measure, while backers hoped the House might revive it and possibly return it to the Senate.

Cambridge obituary notes Alice Stone Blackwell a pioneer in women's suffrage who died at her home at age 92. She was daughter of Lucy Stone and helped organize the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association in 1870 and supported the Women's Journal. She served as recording secretary of the National American Woman Suffrage Association for 20 years.
ST. LOUIS government officials rebuked Alderman Alfred Harris a lawyer for filing ten income tax estimates for 1949. He said extra fees prompted him to pay taxes early to avoid cash shortages, noting many taxpayers face similar budgeting challenges.
Mayor Henry Ahrenstate vetoed a La Crosse measure restricting milk sales to within city limits. The ordinance would require pasteurized milk and products to be produced and bottled inside La Crosse, approved by the health board. Council referred the measure to committee after a 12 to 8 defeat. the final adoption passed 16 to 4.
President Truman signed a bill repealing federal taxes on oleomargarine at Key West after arriving for vacation. The law eliminates federal taxes on margarine but allows state taxes to continue. Restaurants must sell yellow margarine in triangular pots with a notice and packages must weigh no more than the pound and be labeled oleomargarine.
