Secretary of Agriculture Brannan urged Congress to apply the Brannan farm plan with production payments to the 1951 Irish potato crop. He warned that under current price supports the cost would run 80 to 100 million dollars, versus 25 to 35 million with the Brannan plan, and urged a quick, rationed marketing quota system to reduce the surplus.

Martin F. Lindgren, 55, of 1217 Weston Street, died Tuesday in Barstow California during a vacation trip with his wife and friends. A La Crosse native, he founded the La Crosse Mosaic Tile Co twenty years ago after moving from Minneapolis and later ran Fier Mart and wood floor finishing before selling in 1949. He and his wife also ran a resort near Haugen. His body will be returned to La Crosse for burial. funeral plans are incomplete.

The six foot sheriff O W Blackie Morrow was shot Sunday on a mountain road near Shafter. He dragged to his car and died. The killer who cuffed him and took his gun may have fled into rugged northern Mexico as possemen search the Big Bend country with Texas Rangers border patrol and a Bureau of Animal Industry plane. The trail vanished at a goat camp seven miles from the border.
W F Poorman and F L Merritt of the Central Life Assurance Society led a regional conference for 15 Wisconsin general agents in La Crosse. Manney T Heisel hosted. The three day session covered better selection and training of career life underwriters. Mrs Heisel hosted coffee and E Osterheld of Stoughton celebrated his 36th anniversary with the organization at a dinner.
Alfred Petersen, 38, an American engineer, arrived in Sydney harbor aboard the 3 foot cutter Stornoway after sailing solo from Miami since April 1949. Petersen said he bought the boat in 1848 for 6700 dollars and undertook a world cruise alone.
George Larson, 74, former Trempealeau county treasurer and longtime Whitehall resident, died Monday at his home after a yearlong illness. Born May 28, 1875 in Norway, he immigrated with his family to Wisconsin, married Millie Stuggerud in 1904, and lived in Whitehall since then. He ran an implement business, served on the Whitehall school board, managed his son’s Almena store during the war, and held roles with Pigeon Mutual Insurance and Our Savior's Lutheran church. He is survived by his wife, son Ernest, three daughters Mrs. Olga Lillehammer and Mrs. Ida Salverson, a sister, and five grandchildren. Funeral services Friday at 2 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Whitehall with burial in Lincoln Cemetery.

Five members escape a flaming one story frame house near Antigo Wisconsin but six year old Rose Young died in the blaze. Mother 44 and older brother 15 Harlan are hospitalized in serious condition. The family fled in nightclothes, breaking windows to escape. Fire likely started from a wood stove in zero weather.
