New York March 1 Harry K Thaw won a writ of habeas corpus in the supreme court authorizing another examination of his mental state. This marks the fifth writ he has obtained since his detention at Matteawan asylum.
Greek forces near Melisa routed a Turkish detachment yesterday and inflicted heavy losses, according to dispatches this afternoon.
Madison reports the Wisconsin legislature passed a unanimous joint resolution extending heartfelt sympathy to Lieutenant Governor Thomas Morris on the death of his mother Mrs John Morris. The resolution directs it be entered in the journals and copies sent to Morris. Floral offerings include a bouquet from Wisconsin legislature members. Sergeant-at-Arms Charles Leicht and Charles H. Rawlinson will attend the funeral.
Captain D S MacArthur promoted to major by the adjutant general in Madison. Company M inspection in La Crosse on April 16 led by Captain Robert H Wescott. Wisconsin National Guard encampments set for Camp Douglas near Sparta: First and Second infantry July 5–11, Third infantry and Tenth battalion July 12–18, State rifle corps July 21–26. Rifle team to compete for state title and may advance to Camp Perry, with national camp in August.
In Crawford County circuit court this morning a motion for a new trial in Munson versus Erick Peterson was denied by Judge E. C. Higbee. The libel case stemmed from allegations that Peterson circulated harmful stories about the District Attorney. A separate divorce case saw Louise Travis granted a divorce from Fred Travis on non-support and desertion grounds.
William Johnston was arrested here after Winona police notified that he is wanted for grand larceny in Winona. He allegedly stole two saddles valued at 68 dollars. Henry Havens, accused of stealing a 15 dollar watch and a 2 dollar revolver from Lawrence Frang, 2202 Cass, was arrested in Winona and will be brought to La Crosse for trial. Havens was rooming with Frang.
River Falls defeated Normal 18 to 15 in a hard fought game. The earlier meeting saw River Falls lose 68 to 22 here, showing marked improvement. Tonight Coach Carter's squad travels to Superior Normal for another contest.
Interest in the 17,000 rubber workers strike centers on a state senatorial committee investigation. The panel began work yesterday and today 30 rubber workers were called and examined by the committee as the inquiry proceeds.
Mrs Maria Phillips was shot in her south side grocery store early today and may not recover. She told police a fan appeared in the doorway and fired. Police seek her husband from whom she had separated a month ago.
The service takes place Monday afternoon at 12 o'clock at the home of Mrs August Beyer in Smiths Coulee and at 2:30 at the German Lutheran church with Rev J Gamm officiating. Interment follows in Oak Grove cemetery.
About 75 000 workers return to work in New York City after a long eight hour demand and sweatshop abolition dispute. Factories will run overtime through Easter due to backlog. The compromise grants sanitary workshops and sweatshop abolition, raises wages by one dollar weekly plus proportionate piece rates, and supports open shop with no discrimination against strikers. Arthur Newton prominent solicitor was arrested by Scotland Yard for conspiracy to defraud a client of 115000 dollars. Newton was Crippen’s defense counsel in the Crippen murder case. Crippen himself was captured after an overseas chase when he fled to Canada with his office assistant.
Madison March 1 Senator Paul Husting opposes automatic firearms and introduces a bill outlawing use of automatic auto loading or self loading shotguns for hunting birds or animals. Proponents warn that continued use could exterminate all birds and game within years.
The mutilated body of Ernest Kehr, prominent Milwaukee attorney and former assistant district attorney under District Attorney Zabel, was found on Northwestern tracks near Carrollville early today. Kehr had been suffering from a nervous breakdown for several months.
Trenton New Jersey March 1 Chancellor Edwin Robert Walker legal adviser to the forthcoming Wilson antitrust program declined the offer of the United States attorney generalship preferring his role as head of the New Jersey judiciary. Rumor says James C McReynolds from Tennessee may be named next attorney general.
Captain A H Rostron, who commanded the Carpathia and rescued more than 700 Titanic passengers, received a solid gold medal in a White House ceremony. Taft praised Rostron in a brief address before Congress members and Mrs Rostron.
Pittsburgh March 1 Edward Exter was found guilty of first degree murder in the assault and killing of 12 year old Lillian Schadle on Thanksgiving Eve. The verdict concludes a high profile case with strong evidence presented by prosecutors.
