D. G. MacMillan announced his candidacy for mayor of La Crosse before the nonpartisan primary on March 18. He cites a modern business approach, dismissed active interests, and a pledge to deliver value for public spending, aiming to serve 36,000 residents with undivided attention.
In Minneapolis on February 28 the SoO line was named as defendant in a U.S. district court complaint by the United States alleging violations of the nine hour law for telegraph operators. J. H. Seeger of Rockford and T. F. Doyle of Maple Lake allegedly worked thirteen hours in a twenty four hour period. Penalty of 2000 dollars plus costs is sought.
Milwaukee County District Attorney Edward Yockey opens a campaign against cocaine users and pushers promising sensational disclosures. Warrants issued for six pharmacists. one, G O Schorse, arrested. Yockey seeks a prison term and fines in a pending Wisconsin bill. Otto Goetzke described his drug sensations while questioned.
Mrs. Oliana Thompson of 225 North Seventh Street died at home at 10 this morning after a three year illness. Born in Gulbransdaen Norway in 1844 she came to La Crosse fifty years ago and was married here in 1868. Survived by four daughters Mrs. C S Haviland Mrs Frederick Beth Mrs W R Kemp and Miss Bergetha Thompson and a son Theodore Thompson of Spence McCord Drug Co. Funeral Sunday at 2 from the home and 2:30 from German Lutheran Church with Rev H G Magelssen. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery.
New York officials of the buttonhole workers union say the inquest into Abram Steinberg secretary of the union will reveal an amazing murder plot. The coroner's inquiry opens March 8 and stems from Steinberg's death during the clothing workers strike.
Ten starters completed a fourteen day hike from New York to deliver a suffrage letter to President-elect Wilson. The group faced a hostile crowd as Miss Alice Paul arrived late and Rosalie Jones led the reception with a spirited greeting. The marchers included General Rosalie Jones and Colonel Ida Craft among ten survivors from the original party.
A West New York trolley car and Dr Stork raced to a local drug store as women helped Mrs Mary Rooney to the door. The trolley won and the birth of a healthy girl was announced at North Husband hospital where mother and child were reported doing well.
Governor Sulzer said his administration will turn the rascals out and that many will be removed. He noted he is awaiting a final report from the investigating committee and spoke grimly on the matter in Albany.

Otto Brendler longtime train master of the Green Bay division of the C M and St P railroad died in Green Bay Wisconsin at age 51 He joined the Milwaukee road in 1877 and was a pioneer in the railroad’s service.
