State workers gain $10 monthly pay raise via emergency board

About 13 500 Wisconsin state employees will receive a $10 monthly boost approved by the State Emergency Board despite opposition from Sen Porter. The action, costing roughly $1.6 million yearly, applies across the board and accompanies higher pay ranges for civil service.

Residents donate 426 pints in La Crosse blood drive

Citizens assure Red Cross officials they want to keep the program in La Crosse County. By Friday 11 45 a m the Badger Regional Bloodmobile had collected 426 pints well above the 375 pint quota. Ninety donors were registered by late morning and Thursday totals included 177 pints from 233 donors.

Two State Flood Control Projects Approved

The House public works subcommittee approved 34 flood control projects nationwide including two Wisconsin sites. Eau Galle River at Spring Valley and Bad River near Mellen and Odanah totaling 7.6 million dollars, with a separate Mississippi River project at Winona Minnesota costing about 1.6 million. The omnibus bill could go to the full committee next week.

Milwaukee tavernkeeper shot dead in second floor apartment

Milwaukee police report John Nicolaeff aged 64 was found shot in his upstairs living quarters above Johnny's Tap. Bartender Herbert Poizin found him. A cigar box under the bed contained money, suggesting robbery was unlikely as motive.

An experimental device from Linfield College McMinnville Oregon can draw high speed electrons from tiny tungsten tips to generate powerful ultra fast X rays. It produces millionth of a second exposures and can capture internal motion such as a bullet exiting a gun muzzle or a man being shot from a cannon. The system uses light weight hardware and modest power and yields high beam intensity and controllability for rapid imaging.
