John L. Lewis Dies at 89 Union Leader and CIO Founder

John L. Lewis longtime head of the United Mine Workers and founder of the CIO died at Doctors Hospital at age 89 after a Sunday admission for internal bleeding. The tough labor figure who helped organize coal miners and later the CIO spoke of organizing the million and a quarter miners. He led strikes during World War II and faced contempt charges over job actions, shaping industrial unionism in the United States.

Beaten Madison technologist questioned after amnesia

Miss Mariana Wipfli a 24 year old medical technologist at St Marys Hospital in Madison was found blood spattered and unconscious in her apartment Tuesday. She regained consciousness Wednesday and could recognize her mother but remained in fair condition and unable to be extensively questioned due to limited amnesia. Police said the weapon used is unknown and there is no evident sexual assault or link to a separate UW Rothschild case.

Defense Hammers At State Witness In Schulter Case

Chippewa Falls Wisconsin defense attorney Patrick Doyle challenged state witness Elmer Blashaski during the Roger Schulter trial to expose conflicting versions of events about the May 5 1967 crash. Blashaski admitted making speculations in some answers as Doyle pressed details about buying beer and driver identity. The case, tied to five deaths near Bangor and La Crosse, continues as prosecutors seek to prove Cavadini was too drunk to drive and Schulter allowed it.

Youngster Survives Bear Attack Near Fishing Bridge Yellowstone

Daphne Jax, five, mauled by a grizzly at Trailer Village in Yellowstone, was flown home by Air Force evac plane and is reported in good condition by Children's Hospital. Park Ranger killed the bear after the attack near Yellowstone Lake.

Explosion destroys Schaller Supply near Holmen injuring none

A gas bottle explosion at Schaller Supply Inc on McHugh Road near Holmen caused $75 000 in damage at 9 45 p m. Fire crews fought multiple blasts through the night with no injuries reported. Local residents heard the blast from nearby communities and helped evacuate the area.

La Crescent Board Reaffirms Call for Resignation

In La Crescent Minnesota the Board of Education again voted to request the resignation of Superintendent William Stetzler. Four members supported the motion while two opposed as a crowd gathered at La Crescent High School. A citizen committee collected signatures from about 600 residents and staff urging rescission of the May action.
