Niagara River flow nearly stopped as workers completed rock fill for a cofferdam to divert water to the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Army engineers will lower to the rock face to test Rochester shale and study erosion prevention, with a five-month project and a maintained spray near the brink. Tourism remains open at a reduced price with crossings allowed and the Cave of the Winds still operating.

Longtime La Crosse County official C H Guenther dies
Charles H. Guenther 73 of Onalaska dies at home on Thursday June 12 after serving since 1946 on the County Board representing the 32nd District. He held roles on welfare and institutional committees and was a former Onalaska alderman and church leader. He served in World War I earning a Purple Heart and is survived by a large family. Visitation and services planned at Onalaska Methodist Church with Masonic rites at the funeral home.

Eugene Murphy, La Crosse civic leader and state university regent, was honored at the dedication of La Crosse State University’s new $2.6 million library named for him. Gov Knowles and educators lauded Murphy’s lifelong service as the library was praised for its capacity. The ceremony drew regents and officials from across Wisconsin, plus the Murphy clan.

Dr. James W. Nellen, 55, Green Bay Packers physician, was elected president of the University of Wisconsin board of regents. He succeeds Charles D. Gelatt who did not seek re election. Nellen a Madison native and UW graduate played football for Wisconsin in the 1930s. Bernard C. Zeigler of West Bend was named vice president.
Regents Back ROTC Programs At Wisconsin State University
Regent Milton Neshek introduced a resolution urging strong ROTC support as integral to the university, seeking full academic credit for ROTC participants and appropriate academic rank for ROTC faculty. AWSUF and Wisconsin State University faculties questioned granting rank and credit, arguing faculty on each campus should determine ROTC status. The measure contrasts with campuses nationwide where student protests have grown.

Settlement ends Northwest Airlines pilots strike
A six hour walkout by about 1600 Northwest pilots ended with a settlement announced by National Mediation Board chairman Leverett Edwards. The agreement lowers flying time to 80 hours a month starting July 1 1970 and adds a special 747 differential, with pilots still earning up to 65 000 to 70 000 dollars annually and operations back to normal.
