Nuclear pacemaker tested in dogs eyes human trials soon

Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark reports 25 volunteers for the first human implantation of a nuclear powered cardiac pacemaker after successful dog trials. The device, developed with the Atomic Energy Commission, is two thirds the size of a cigarette pack, weighs 3½ ounces and should last at least 10 years with comparable costs to current battery powered devices.

Homebuilt plane crash on approach near La Crosse Airport

James R. Wright, 35, of 3110 S 27th St, was piloting a homebuilt craft that stalled and crashed 900 feet from the La Crosse Municipal Airport runway. He was hospitalized in serious yet improving condition with face injuries. The craft had a 17 foot wing span and 55 horsepower VW engine.

Surtax Extension Faces Major Test
