City Youth Drowns In Black River After Boat Incident
A 15-year-old La Crosse youth, John Rhodes, drowned in the Black River near Hoffman Mobile Addition Trailer Court after a boating accident while fishing in Catgut Slough. Witnesses recalled the boat circling out of control and Rhodes disappearing as the motor pulsaed. Police recovered the body at 6 05 p m and the coroner found no visible injuries.

Lt. Sharon Lane of Canton Ohio becomes the first U S Army nurse killed by enemy fire in Vietnam. Serving at Chu Lai with the 312th Evacuation Hospital she refused transfer to another ward, cared for Vietnamese patients, and died when a rocket hit the hut area. A Vietnamese child also died and 23 Vietnamese and two Americans were wounded.

Fire Fighters Local 127 urged the La Crosse Common Council Finance Committee to approve a 193 561 package for fiscal 1970. The request would raise salaries and benefits by about 150 dollars monthly per fireman, with starting pay at 465 and top steps at 553.
