Regents approve tuition hike for Minnesota residents

The University of Minnesota regents on Saturday approved a $105 annual tuition increase for resident students and raised nonresident fees from $280 per quarter to $380.

Laird says Nixon pullout moves US toward peace

Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird stated that Nixon’s decision to pull 25 000 troops from Vietnam brings the United States closer to peace. He noted a plan to shift U S forces’ role in Vietnam and Southeast Asia and said the first units to leave will be decided Thursday for a July withdrawal. Some troops may be held in reserve in Okinawa and Hawaii rather than returning home.

President Nixon orders the immediate redeployment of about 25 000 U S troops from Vietnam beginning within 30 days, with completion by August as South Vietnam forces gain capability. Thieu approves, calling it good news for Americans, while critics doubt a real policy shift.

Banks Raise Prime Rate to Historic 8 Percent

Major banks raised the prime rate to 8 percent from 7 percent effective immediately. Bankers Trust Co led the move, followed by Chase Manhattan and First National City of New York along with others in New York Chicago Philadelphia and Boston. Fire at log cabin kills eight in Oneida County

A fire at a Virgin Lake cottage in Three Lakes Wisconsin killed eight people from the Milwaukee area including Rev Edward Bogusz Paul Grede his wife Ann and three children plus two Czachowski children and another child missing. Nine relatives had arrived at the cottage owned by Alois Diedrich. The blaze was found at 5 15 am. Authorities sought a ninth victim as a motorist alerted nearby residents.

Strikes Begin At Four Milwaukee Breweries

Milwaukee four major breweries start walkouts after contract talks break down. About 4500 union production workers vote 3049 to 507 against the latest offer. Wages would rise 57 cents per hour over two years. basic rate is 3.89 an hour.

Two Week Strike at Anheuser Busch Plants Prolonged

A two week strike at Anheuser Busch idled about 10 000 workers across seven cities. The Teamsters demand a one year contract while Anheuser Busch seeks a three year pact. The stoppage began May 27 in Jacksonville and spread to Tampa Newark Columbus Los Angeles and St Louis.

Final Rites Scheduled For Marine From La Crosse

Marine Pfc. John W. Kirchner, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marlin D. Kirchner of 520 S 6th St La Crosse, killed in Vietnam May 27, to be honored in services at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral with a Fosbum Funeral Home visitation and a Rosary. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery with a Marine Corps color guard and pall bearers. He died of multiple fragment wounds near An Hoa, Quang Nam Province while on a search and clear mission.
