Declines were led by Chesapeake & Ohio, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Union Pacific with other western stocks dropping several points. Trading closed slightly lower but with an undercurrent of resilience.

Chicago Grain Review Bears Hold Weak Opening
The government crop report was viewed bearishly by traders in Chicago while July and September wheat slipped early. Corn found support from buying orders as prices recovered near yesterday's close. Oats dipped on bearish crop talk but rose modestly with restocking orders. Provisions firmed on hog price gains but retreated later. Wheat firmed late as buyers absorbed supply.
