Five youths from Minneapolis were held after a vandalism spree that left fifteen people injured. police report indicates property damage and arrests connected to the incident.
A South Side melee during Independence Day celebrations drew police action as about 100 youths, many described as Negro, clashed near Powderhorn Park. Firebombs caused small blazes and windows were broken while two youths were hospitalized and others treated for injuries. Gary Schoener, 23, sustained an eye injury, and Edward Arneson, 14, suffered a stomach injury in the unrest following a George Wallace appearance.
Four Cresco educators died in a Lake of the Woods fishing cabin incident in Ontario. Richard Fossum, 28, Cresco High School chemistry and biology teacher, is one of the victims. Also killed were Harold Harris, James Davis, and Harry Schroder. Coroner says likely asphyxiation from propane heaters. cabin sealed. Fossum, son of Mr and Mrs Ove Fossum, was a Luther College graduate and had studied at Oslo, Berkeley, Iowa State, and Rhode Island.
Julie Nixon says she and fiancé David Eisenhower will delay wedding plans until after the November election. The couple appeared with David at a news conference during a political visit in Richmond Virginia. David, grandson of Dwight D. Eisenhower, marked a first by kissing a baby at a Republican rally in Hillsville.
Bruce Brossat reports Nixon likely to arrive in Miami with 753 delegate votes assured or leaning his way, over the 667 needed for nomination. Rockefeller trails with about 370, Reagan 149, plus 61 undecided. Gains since May include Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi shifts.
Dr John C Cross 55 longtime La Crosse dentist died at home after a 30 year practice. A Minnesota graduate and WWII dental corps captain he led local professional groups and served St Francis Hospital. Services Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Church with burial in Catholic Cemetery. Memorials to Dominican Monastery.
In Lake Wales Florida seven children and a man drowned when a 12 foot boat capsized during a Fourth of July outing on Lake Easy. An 11 year old girl survived clinging to the hull until rescue. Names include William Harrell 35 Belinda Clay Cynthia Clay Jimmie Elaine Clay Sheila Jennings Carolyn Jones Cynthia Jackson Rhonda Tucker.
Debra Riesing a 16 year old Logan High senior won the Miss American Legion title at Riverside Park in La Crosse. She bested five other contestants with a comic monologue talent. Riesing received 150 in bonds plus store certificates and will represent the Legion in events throughout the year.
George M Keith deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Social Services will retire July 15. He joined the department in 1939 and became deputy director in 1953, his title later changing to deputy secretary after the Kellett plan. Keith, 66, is a University of Wisconsin graduate with a 1948 public finance PhD. A successor will be named later.
U S fighter-bombers and B52 bombers targeted missile sites in North Vietnam while ground troops searched for caches near Saigon. U S officials reported multiple rocket caches found 30 miles from the capital and 180 miles northwest of Saigon. The raids aimed to curb planned attacks on Saigon as intelligence improved.
Patrick D. O Connor a 20 year old Rockford Illinois sophomore at La Crosse State University was killed in a head on collision on Highway 16 near Old Highway 16 West Salem. Stanley A Servais 18 of Rockford was treated for severe facial head and arm injuries. O Connor carried two identifications including a dormitory listing and was identified at Jostad Funeral Home. The body to be sent to Rockford for funeral services.
