Cook County Jail Guard Fired After Attempted Break
Warden Winston Moore fired guard Irvin T. Sturdivant and ordered an inquiry into three others after five prisoners dressed as guards attempted a mass escape at Cook County Jail. The inmates, armed with a shotgun, overpowered guards and moved from a second floor tier through a dumbwaiter to the basement and outer walls before being spotted. No officers were hurt amid a chaotic shootout, though 100 shots were fired. The escapees were named as John Holmes, Charles Dennis, Osborn Fortson, Clyde Gunn, and Frank Ross.
