Two Wisconsin couples and a Wisconsin Rapids minister aboard the Florida to Cuba hijacked airliner described a midnight banquet in Havana. They reported Cuban troops and government involvement, saw new construction, and noted delays and restricted photography during arrival and return to Miami.
Miami reporting that the Northwest Airlines hijacker who forced a flight with 86 passengers to Havana has been identified as Mario Velazquez, a Cuban exile. The State Department said identification is confirmed while FBI verification continues.
President Johnson attended the swearing in of Gen. William C. Westmoreland as the Army's 25th chief of staff. Westmoreland pledged loyalty to authorities and troops, while noting enemy offensives and allied strength in Vietnam. The ceremony included top military leaders and a 19 gun salute at the Pentagon.
A Sea World Airlines DC8 with 214 Vietnam bound troops was released by the Soviet Union after two days of detention in Iturup. Pilot Capt Joseph Tosolini said the plane did not stray over Soviet air space and described changes to letters he signed as conditions of release. The FAA cited radar data showing possible air space violation, while Tosolini noted the intercepting MIGs and the crew’s orderly descent to the airfield before arrival at Yokota.

Decorah Iowa Fred Biermann 84 former Northern District of Iowa congressman died Monday in a La Crosse hospital He served 1932 to 1938 and was a lifelong Democrat He edited the Decorah Journal from 1908 to 1931 and was postmaster 1913 to 1923 A memorial service will be held at the Decorah Elks Club at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The Navy runs a 30 day experiment aboard the guided missile cruiser Springfield to see if serving ice cream in cones on ship is feasible. The test began June 14 in the Caribbean, with potential authorization for wafer cups and cone service when in port if successful.
