Judge Dowling delivers a detailed charge to the jury in Thaw case. Jurors retire after exhibits are reviewed and constitutional rights discussed. Thaw, nervous, is escorted by guards as his wife and mother join him in a prison room before recess. Continues on Page Six.
Helmut Franz a pioneer contractor in La Crosse died at his home 822 Cass street after a month of bronchitis at age 54. Born in Germany he came to the United States in 1870 and has lived here since. Surviving are his widow and four children Bertha Thresa Minnie and Henry Franz. Funeral Sunday at 2 30 from the residence with Rev Andreas officiating and Oak Grove Cemetery interment. Concord Aid society members will attend in a body.
Weather Bureau Chief Moore compiles statistics on the reach of weather reports in Wisconsin's Seventh District corrected to December 15. The report lists mail routes and postmaster connections, rural free delivery, and telephone forecast subscribers across Alma Center Arcadia Blair etc, highlighting widespread distribution.
Word came of the death of Miss Elsie Odegaar formerly of La Crosse now living in Minneapolis. The body will be sent to La Crosse tomorrow for funeral services Monday at 2 36 PM at the Norwegian Lutheran church with Rev. Magelssen officiating and burial at Oak Grove cemetery.
Attorney George H. Gordon confined to his home at 410 South Fourteenth street with grip and pneumonia worsens today after a physician consultation. A class was expected to pass tonight or tomorrow.
Ernest Getts is appointed manager of the Fay Lewis cigar store on Main Street succeeding Lester Keene. Getts formerly served as assistant cashier at Reitzel's.
A fire leveled Twin Lakes, a village south west of Albert Lea, Minnesota, along the Minneapolis and St. Louis railroad. No injuries are reported and the cause is under investigation.
Lincoln Illinois January 41 details of the treatment of Frank Giroux burned in the Lincoln asylum for feeble minded children were disclosed in a legislative committee investigation. Louis Eppinger superintendent testified that after the boy was burned he ordered two blocks on a stretcher then dressed him in a Sunday suit to see his father. The boy, almost unconscious, could not recognize his father. Dr Rochow the attending physician also testified.
A generator stolen from W. J. Hickisch has been returned. a man who bought it for 4 dollars refused to name the thief, canceling a $25 reward from the La Crosse Motorboat Club. Hickisch is pleased the case closes.
Nels Nelson of Nelson & Bert Lumber Company in Dorchester Wisconsin disappeared after Jan 11 while on a business trip to Dell Rapids and Minneapolis. A $100 reward is offered by relatives and friends for evidence. Nelson is 28, 5 feet 11 inches, 160 pounds, with dark brown hair and blue eyes. He wore a gray plaid suit, overcoat, and derby, and carried a tan suitcase with clothes bearing the tailor's name Andrew B Wilson of Abbotsford Wisconsin.
Washington reports that backers of a bill creating the Appalachian White Mountain forest reserve seek a House Agriculture Committee hearing. The proposal aims to save hardwoods, prevent fire and destruction, and unlock water power development. The president supports it and forest service pushes it. Senate action is anticipated this session. The hearings may last two days and attract many officials.
Wisconsin court records report John H. Thomas jailed for two years in Waupun for taking eighty cents by false pretense from Bruno Breuer. Thomas previously grafted in Milwaukee and used a minor loan ruse involving a five dollar bill. Separately, George Grebner, 19, received two years at the Wisconsin Reformatory for indecent liberties with Rosie Millwaiz, 11.
Judge Fruit grants a non-suit in the Nessler case against the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul Railway for 5000 damages over Miss Mayme Nessler’s death at the Northside depot. Defense cites contributory negligence and danger from gates, while plaintiffs plan appeal to the supreme court. A libel suit against Crawford County Press publishers follows, with claims of six months of alleged misconduct.
Baron Takahira the newly named Japanese ambassador to the United States postpones his departure due to a mild influenza attack. He now expects to leave Rome on Monday.
New York bank failed to open as a run continued with a long line of depositors awaiting service. State Banking Superintendent Williams ordered the closure and a notice was posted on the doors.
Washington reports the president’s special message to Congress as the strongest, most vigorous state paper yet. He demands immediate re-enactment of the employers’ liability law and pledges to push his national honesty program with unyielding energy despite lobbyists and corporate influence.

William H. Meutsch a wagonmaker of 419 Armitage Avenue shot and killed his infant daughter and fatally wounded two other children aged four and six in a late yesterday afternoon incident. He was arrested in a half crazed state while divorce proceedings are cited as the motive, with authorities noting an alleged attempt to exterminate the entire family.
The Travelers plan an elegant evening with Kreutz's orchestra providing the music and a banquet to be served. A promised enjoyable night includes after dance car service for attendees.
Last evening two youths burglarized Nathanial C. Strout’s gunshop at 316 Pearl Street, taking a large number of shells and a revolver worth about 75 dollars. They are in custody of the police and are expected to appear before Judge Brindley in a few days.
The funeral for Russell Pederson, child of Mr and Mrs C Pederson, was held yesterday afternoon from 524 South Fourteenth Street with interment at Oak Grove cemetery. Pallbearers were Verna Hulberg Ester Nyhus Jessie Nyhus and Hazel Thompson.

Forecasts call for Wisconsin snow tonight and Saturday, warmer northeast tonight, colder Saturday afternoon with high northeast winds. Iowa expects heavy snow tonight and possibly Saturday with a cold wave and shifting winds from east to northwest.
