The jury acquitted Henry H. Thaw of murder on insanity grounds after 25 hours of deliberation. Judge Dowling ordered Thaw committed to Matteawan asylum for the criminal insane, with possible release upon recovery. Evelyn and Josiah Thaw were present. Mrs. Thaw fainted on hearing the verdict as Thaw greeted his family with a broad smile.
Jerome and Littleton clash as Dowling commits Thaw to Matteawan. Thaw returns to the Tombs while Littleton seeks private confinement and an insanity commission to prove Thaw’s present sanity. Jury verdict reaches not guilty on insanity grounds. habeas corpus sought to move him. No overnight word from jurors.
The body of Frank Harrington will arrive on Milwaukee Road train No 2 from Helena Montana this evening and be taken to the home of Thomas Harrington 407 Caledonia Street. The funeral is scheduled for 9 o clock Monday morning at White's Church.
Sixty nine pupils will enter the high school from the recent exams. Twenty gain entry on recommendation and 49 passed the final tests. Several others are under review for possible admission on condition. Recommends include Clarence Drake Ewale Techmer Carl Weber Josephine Hintgen and others. Passed include Roy Ahlstrom Edna Lawsen Marguerite Allen Herbert Hauser and additional scholars.
Word arrived in La Crosse of the death of Mrs. Han shen Neuman widow of Simon Neuman a pioneer merchant. She died after a lingering illness in Duluth at age 70 leaving a brother a son and two daughters in Duluth. Funeral from 22 North Sixth street and burial in the Jewish cemetery follows arrival of the remains.
Dr. Shegetaro Morikubo leaves tonight for Baraboo to address the Brotherhood of St. Paul at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon on The Yankee of the Orient. He is also asked to preach at the Sunday evening service on The Effects of Budhism and Christianity Upon Life before returning to La Crosse Monday.
The condition of Attorney George H. Gordon at his home on 499 South 14th Street is about the same. Dr. La flin reports he has an attack of pneumonia with grip and faces a weak prognosis though odds of recovery remain possible.
E J Stein and J A Gardner returned from Milwaukee where Wisconsin retailers secured La Crosse as the annual convention site for early August likely August 5 to 7. The plan includes Iowa and Minnesota associations meeting simultaneously with about 75 Wisconsin delegates and equal numbers from other states plus wholesalers. J A Stein elected vice president for the southwest district of Wisconsin.
Alderman Gus Keller reports a letter from the state board of railway commissioners outlining steps for action on the Mill street crossing. The commission says formal city council complaint is needed and that Morris petition questions only the street car company, not rail lines. Keller hands the letter and clippings to Mayor Anderson for enlightenment.
Alfred Olson was acquitted of complicity in the December robbery of the West Salem Trading Association store amid a county court climax. Gor man T. Gorman confessed but police and prosecutors dispute his account. Kerrigan, Sloane, and Mero faced charges for concealing stolen watches tied to the case.
In the libel action brought by J Sime of Crawsonty against Wal Lace Martner and Herbert Beach publishers of the Prairie du Chien Courier for 2000 damages the publisher admitted printing the article and ownership of the paper. Sime testified as the defense sought to introduce the entire allegedly libelous piece arguing it contains all allegations. Attorneys Bancroft and Schweier debated the testimony and scope of evidence after 3 p.m.
The La Crosse County Bar Association voted to attend Attorney Lemuel W. Gosnell's funeral in a body tomorrow afternoon. They will accompany the casket from the home to the Masonic temple and Oak Grove cemetery. A committee of Hartwell, Bosshard and Baldwin will draft resolutions on his death.
The Home Bank of Brooklyn failed to open this morning after days of a bank run. State banking department assumed control. The bank, organized in 1805 with capital of $100,000, shows deposits around $389,000.
Colonel Orlando Holway said the appointment of a bandmaster to succeed Prof. F. G. Dana will likely wait until after the officers convention in Milwaukee later this month or early next month. He noted the exact convention date is not yet set. La Crosse officers including Col. Holway Col. Kircheis Lieut. Hallauer and Dr. McArthur will attend along with about 150 representatives from across the state.
Five people were burned to death and fifteen injured in a February boarding house fire at Eleventh and Wyandotte streets. Survivors escaped in scant clothing as the city faced one of its coldest nights in years.
State Bar Commission ordered investigation into La Crosse Gas and Electric property with N Strait and F H Hanson auditing outside wiring and distribution assets. They will inventory, test meters, then take data to Madison for valuation and rate rise decision. Strait says the process is ongoing and details are limited.
Punta Arenas Feb 1 Chilean tender Yanes and several private steamships filled with excursionists sailed to meet and welcome the American battleship fleet off Magdalena island. The fleet weighed anchor and began its voyage from Possession Bay about 20 miles west of the strait.
Telegram from Chicago reports Ole P. Olson 43 died after back injury last fall. Former La Crosse resident, barn boss for National Lead in Chicago, leaves widow and two children. Survived by parents in La Crosse and brothers August Carl and Theodore. Funeral plans incomplete.
Irish actor Dennis O'Sullivan died at Grant hospital after an appendicitis operation. He was 57 and known for stage and screen work in the early career. The death occurred in Columbus Ohio on February 1.
In Tokyo, War Minister Terauchi says Japan's military preparations aim at Pacific eventualities, not at a specific nation, with coast protection from Sakhalin to Formosa. Foreign office notes say talks with the United States on immigration are practically settled. Viscount Aoki to join the privy council.
Paris February 1 A great gathering attends funeral services for Cardinal Richard. It is reported that hours before death the expiring prelate predicted in a trance that the Kaiser Wilhelm would die shortly after him.
Two local youths were committed to the Wisconsin Industrial School for Boys in Waukasha after pleading guilty to a nighttime burglary at N C Strout’s gun shop on Pearl Street. They stole six revolvers two rifles two sheath knives and ammunition. Each boy reached for a loaded revolver as police arrived and testified they would fight if the other started. Detective stories were cited as a cause for their behavior.
At the next meeting of the North Side Progression league a resolution will be presented to install gates at the Burlington crossing just north of the La Crosse river bridge and to station a gate-tender there full time. Promoters cite poor northbound visibility since the Standard Oil building went up and recall a near miss when a street car was struck nearby, urging safety improvements.
Chicago February 1 A secret legislative session in Springfield formed a plan for two sub committees to visit state institutions at midnight to collect evidence. Representatives Hope and McLaughlin will tour the Pontiac state reformatory while Manny and Ireland head to the Jacksonville insane asylum.
