Birth rate on decrease for third straight month in NC
North Carolina's May birth total of 20 083 for March May and May shows a deficit of 432 from 1937’s 20 515. Deaths also fall with 9 070 for the three months, while infant deaths under a year rose to 633, maternal deaths up 9 at 61, and whooping cough deaths up 26. Preventable diseases largely declined, with small increases in diarrhea deaths and motor vehicle fatalities down 22 from last May. Dr Reynolds notes the statewide safety campaign may influence the trend.
