City offices except police will close Friday to allow employees a Christmas break, resuming Tuesday morning December 23. A special board session is planned Monday at 4 oclock to discuss annexation of 1 pounds of land near Crescent Hill development within city limits.
Kiwanis Mie LG Reverend James A Sowers pastor of Pins Baptist church Greenwood was to address members of the Kings Mountain Kiwanis club at their meeting at the Woman's Club Thursday night at 4. The program was arranged by L. E. Adoot It was announced that the club will meet on December 21 and will suspend its meeting of December 30.
Parking receipts for the second week of operations ended Wednesday totaling $165, per a report from the Office of the Clerk A. Crouse.
The college lists Len Goforth and Fray Sellers among fall quarter honorees per the official announcement.
Charles G. Dilling, longtime Kings Mountain figure, resigns as county auditor and tax supervisor effective January 1. He is the second local official to step down since the new county board took office, joining Zeb V. Cline Henry McKinney and A C Brackett. Dilling previously served as Kings Mountain city clerk. Plan for the future not announced.
The Herald reports that Gastonia police officer J. E. English was killed in the Ray Aldridge shooting. Al bemarle department officer G Biddix says members contributed $25 to the widow and urges other departments statewide to adopt a plan of a dollar per officer for each line of duty fatality.
One man died and another was severely injured in a head on collision about 4 am six miles south of Kings Mountain on Highway 29 involving large tractor trucks. Charney Chink 83 of Charlotte asleep in the truck died. Ralph McColl 95 of Charlotte driver of the Lance Packing Co truck with Clark was taken to Charlotte Memorial Hospital with injuries. Ephraim Caruso Marsh of High Point driver of the other truck uninjured and scheduled for reckless driving charges. State Patrolman Harold Dayton investigated. Cont'd on page twelve.
Bevores Bones Plang announced a Jaycee Christmas dance at the high school gym Tuesday night December 28. Frank Love and his orchestra with Miss North Carolina as vocalist will provide music. Admission is $1.00 per person tax included. organizers expect a large crowd.
Blakely announced this week the Christmas rush is on at a fast pace. The postoffice keeps staff plus four extras helping with the mail rush: Joe L. Hord, Philip M. Thornburg, John J. George, and Archie B. Costne.
Christmas bonuses totaling 11000 are paid to Phenix Plant employees, a Burlington Mills unit. Superintendent Jack B. Day announced plans for the plant’s Christmas party on December 19, 1948, and noted company wide bonuses totaling about 895000 for production workers. Children’s party at 2:30 on December 7 will gift ages 14 and under after a short program. Plant holidays run from end of second shift December 18 to the first shift on December 28.
The Kings Mountain Ministerial Association elected officers for the coming year and urged citizens to register for the January 8 beer election. Rev. J. W. Phillips was named president, with Rev. L. C. Plonix as vice president and Rev. G. W. Fink as secretary-treasurer. The group endorsed anti beer efforts led by Township No. 4 chairman A. W. Kincaid and thanked Judge Webb and local officials for rally support.
Edgar Brown 21 of Kings Mountain was shot in the leg by Officer Bowen during a Saturday night struggle outside Harlem Grill as officers Bowen and Allen attempted to arrest him for public drunkenness. Brown, freed on bond, faced charges of public drunkenness assault and resisting arrest. Several relatives were later arrested on related charges as a city court date was set.
Kings Mountain district Boy Scout leaders were re elected at a caded meeting last Thursday night with Rev J W Phillip re chosen as chairman for 1949. New officers include Charles E Blalock vice chairman Paul Mauney treasurer Aubrey Mauney and H C Wilson commissioners. Plans for National Boy Scout Week February 3 9 and the annual banquet on February 8 were announced. committees for the coming year will be listed in the Herald.
The Herald announces a one time publishing shift to Wednesday December 22 instead of the usual Friday date. The notice explains the alteration in schedule and instructs readers to note the new publication day.
City commissioners approved Haywood E. Lynch as chairman and named W. W. Parrish John Gantt Wilson Crawford and M. A. Ware to the board of adjustment under the zoning ordinance. The panel serves terms of two to three years, with duties to hear appeals under the ordinance. The meeting also offered office space to the Kings Mountain Red Cross and discussed a motor shed site request from the National Guard.

Chairman W W Tolleson announced gifts in Kings Mountain bring the Girl Scout fund toward its 1000 dollar quota. He urged campaign helpers to finish this week and listed civic and service group representatives aiding the effort.
Joe Grier, commander of the North Carolina American Legion, outlined the three basic aims rehabilitation and child welfare, Americanism, and national security. He debunked the view of the Legion as a WWI veteran political battleground and called for stronger service offices and universal military training.
