Local bulletins announce arrival of city auto tags from the manufacturer and place them on sale at City Hall for the standard fee of $1. Motorists urged to buy early to avoid last minute rush. Parking meter receipts for the bi week ending Wednesday totaled $166.72. total receipts to date $4,925.08.
Bright D. Batterree is named tax lister for Township Four by the county board of commissioners. D. H. Houser is also reappointed as registrar of vital statistics for the township.
Junior Chamber of Commerce in Kings Mountain announces purchase of a $10,000 X ray unit led by Ian J. C. Hedden at the Woman's Club meeting. Earlier plans sought a $12,000 unit, but prices rose above $15,000. drive receipts exceed $1,500 with a $1 per employee pledge from Mauney textile group. Hedden urged remaining contributions before year end as Jimmy McSwain joins Harris Funeral Home as a new member.
The Kings Mountain Wildlife club announces a rain delayed turkey shoot for Saturday afternoon December 18 at 1 pm at the old quarry on Lake Montania road. Ten turkeys and other prizes are listed for the event with public invitation. The shoot was delayed from a pre Thanksgiving date due to heavy rains.
The Christmas week edition will publish December 22 with advertising due by 2 PM on December 20 and news deadline at 10 AM on December 21. The policy shift aims to allow the Herald to begin a Christmas vacation.
Cleveland County voters will decide January 8 on outlawing beer sales. Registration books open December 11, 18, and 27 and January 1 due to a state ruling. Wine sale already banned by county action. petitions secured required signatures and court upheld the election. Kings Mountain officials listed for the two precincts.
The Kings Mountain Junior Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a post Christmas dance at the high school gym on Tuesday night December 28. Music will be by Frank Love and his orchestra of Shelby with vocalist Patty Osborne. The band previously played the Saycee Beauty Ball and featured Miss North Carolina of 1948. Admission is 1.20 per person tax included.
The high school band sponsors a Christmas party for students and parents at the high school gymnasium Monday night. Directors announced Santa Claus will attend for a variety show with sack races dancing and a dancing contest and several other events. Admission is 15 cents.
The Kings Mountain Lions club will host its annual football banquet at the high school cafeteria Tuesday night at 7 o clock. About 200 attendees including Kings Mountain high school gridmen and guests are expected. Coach D C Peahead Walker of Wake Forest College will give the address. Deacons last season posted six wins and three losses. Leading area sports writers Wilton Garrrison Ray Howe Kay s Gary Ken Alexander are invited. The event was moved from the Woman's Club to the high school cafeteria to accommodate the crowd.
The regular city board of commissioners will meet at City Hall Tuesday at 8 with routine business and department reports. The sewer system survey by W K Dickson Company is progressing on schedule and should finish soon. Kiwanis meeting will be Thursday at 6 30 at the Woman's club with a program on Kiwanis evaluation, featuring Rev W L Pressly L Benson Hedden and Barnes. no meeting on December 30th.
Senator Clyde R Hoey of North Carolina urged federal aid to education at a Kings Mountain Kiwanis banquet. He said the bill would help the South and NC, with North Carolina possibly receiving about 1 million dollars. He also backed a electoral college reform to base votes on popular support.
A large crowd is expected at Otis D. Green Yest 155 American Legion and Legion Auxiliary joint dinner meeting Saturday night at the Woman's Club. Joe Grier of Charlotte, state commander elect, will give the principal address. dinner is $1.50. Mrs. Harris said the program includes a narimba performance by Mrs. James McSwain. gifts for Oteen are requested. Local and district officers and their wives will attend.
Kings Mountain Sportsmens Wildlife Club names Wiley Blanton as head of the membership committee and outlines a member recruitment contest with prizes. Omanalis is named director member. a program committee and seasonal meeting plan are set, with federation legislative program approved for club consideration.
The City of Kings Mountain began issuing building permits under the new zoning law this week. The first application by Carrie Hickman for a one story frame house on West Parker Street near Davidson School cost 53000 and received approval and a permit on Tuesday. A certificate of occupancy will be issued after completion. Earlier, on November 16, Carl M. Logan received a permit for adding one room to a residence at 104 Sims Street costing 1100.
Miss Dorcas Carpenter daughter of Mr and Mrs Troy Carpenter has been chosen secretary of the Limestone College freshman class at Gaffney DC in a recent campus election.
Wayne L Ware a prominent Kings Mountain farmer was chosen chair man of the Cleveland County Production Marketing association at the annual delegates meeting from 11 townships last Friday. He succeeds Yates Sperling of Waco who resigned earlier in the week and will also chair Number 4 township committee. Other members named include J C Randall as vice chairman Conrad Hughes as regular member D B Blalock as first alternate and Hugh Falls as second alternate.
Chief M Farr reminded Kings Mountain residents that firing or selling firecrackers violates an act from 1917 and is a misdemeanor punishable by a court's discretion. Police will arrest violators as the department issues instructions. A separate incident reports policeman C L Bowen receiving anti rabies treatment after a dog bite near East School. the dog was shot and lacked a tag.
A Kings Mountain survey shows Christmas holidays for textile workers range from one day to two weeks with plants in varied operation levels. Reports indicate some mills run full schedules, others partial or short weeks, and several planning different holiday closures into late December and early January.
Federal District Judge E Yates Webb spoke to an overflow crowd in Shelby for a union service on temperance. The King Mountain High School band played a short concert before the sermon as churches joined in urging a county wide beer sale ban in the January 8 special election.
