A south central Indiana attack of thunder and lightning struck the Woody Hotel near the railroad in which soot, scattered stove pipes, and floor damage filled four rooms. No fire occurred. carpets suffered the main loss and residents reported minor shocks. Local bystanders and occupants assisted in preventing fire as smoke and soot filled the east chimney area.
Franklin Brown aged 69 died suddenly at his home near Tangier on a Saturday evening. He had been at work and lay down briefly for supper. A granddaughter could not wake him, followed by his grandson and then his son who found him dead. The coroner cited heart failure. He leaves a son and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at Harvey cemetery.
Notice describes a five room house in good repair with cellar cistern and outbuildings plus cement walks to all parts of town on Main Street in Kingman at bargain for a quick sale. Also 20 acres of ground in river bottom. Ora Sowers.
Mrs S H Harrington conducted shopping and business in Covington on Saturday.
J J Hobson describes his favorable view of Texas from Richmond Fort Bend County praising Gulf coast climate and rich land. He notes beef cattle roaming pastures, cotton yields and prices, sparse frosts, anddry Brownsville area with cactus and sand. He promises future letters on Brownsville and Matamoras.
A local band organized after a Friday night meeting with Perl Jackson as manager. The group plans summer concerts and notes talent is strong though member count is not yet fixed. Also E A Bedichek, a Christian evangelist from Gunter Texas, begins a three week meeting June 8 at the Watts school house east of Kingman with everyone invited.
Manda E Baker, daughter of John W and Sarah Lindley, born April 5 1865 Fountain Co Indiana, died May 17 1907 aged 42 years 1 month 12 days. Married Sept 24 1882 to Andrew Baker, two children, one died in infancy. A devout Christian, she joined United Brethren Church in 1881, read the Bible through twelve times, bore illness with patience, sought others happiness, and left a bright testimony. Funeral at her home conducted by Rev McHargue of Kingman, interment Harveysburg Cemetery. She leaves husband one son father four sisters three brothers and many friends.
Last Sunday night a large barn belonging to Chas Carter at Grange Corner burned to the ground from an unknown cause. Five fine horses, several buggies, farming tools, grain, and wagons were lost with little insurance. The fire was well underway before discovery, leaving a heavy total loss and a mystery over the cause.
Jackson township farmers push for a gravel road to Kingman favored over the Hillsboro route as it serves more northwest residents. Strong talks support the Kingman road, which would aid local traders and improve access for northwest buyers. Woody sells harness.
