Frank Thompson was arrested in Veedersburg last Friday on bootlegging charges. In Mayor Dotson's court he pled guilty and received a $60 fine plus 30 days with Sheriff Wertz in Covington. He was taken to Covington where the confiscated liquor was poured into the gutter.
Miss Flosie Fine from Wallace spent the week visiting friends in the area and enjoying local hospitality.
Hazel Wakeland, daughter of Oscar and Ida Wakeland of the Sylvania area, died at the James Swaim home near Centennial last Thursday from accidental poisoning. Born October 5, 1895 in Veedersburg Indiana, she lived a quiet life, excelled in school and work, and had recently renewed her faith. Funeral services were held at Rush Creek church with interment in Rush Creek cemetery. the Wakeland family agrade readers for support during this loss.
James G. Marks, 34, died at St. Elizabeth hospital Lafayette from a fractured skull after a buggy crash near Wild Cat bridge on Buck Creek road. He and James Cooper were riding when two motorcyclists spooked the horse, throwing them from the buggy. Cooper suffered a severe leg cut. Marks was a stock buyer, son of Aaron Marks, and a cousin to local Marks families.
In Covington the circuit court upheld six saloon limit but ordered a license to Will D. Glover after appeals by Phebus. Martin Hill funds the venture in Glover’s building, making Covington the only wet spot between Danville and Indianapolis on the Big Four with six licenses for two years.
Judge Schoonover appointed Elton McClure and Gordon Moffett to the county board of review alongside regular officers. McClure has prior experience. Moffett is a new member and part of the south county’s progressive farmers. They meet June 1 and sit for forty days to inspect and equalize county property assessments.
Col C P Madden and family of Danville and Col A G Madden and family near Cates visited Mrs Elisha Pithead and family yesterday. H M Brown and Fred Duncan were in Crawfordsville Tuesday.
Byron Grismore, president of the Kingman Memorial Association, announces W. R. Jewell of Danville Iowa as the Decoration Day speaker for Sunday May 30. Jewell spoke last year at the Fourth of July event and is praised for patriotism and wit.
Ora Philpott moved into the Martha Harvey property on Second Street yesterday as Capital City paint promotes its quality versus market products for household use.
Alfred Hesler announced plans for an alfalfa tour through the county with a Friday trip possible. He said about forty autos have registered and urged more to join. Rev. Orley Smith will speak at Rush Creek next Sunday forenoon and at Tangier in the evening.

Wheeler McMillen, publisher of the Covington Republican since 1914, has purchased the Newtown Enterprise from Hubert Ellis. Ellis moves to New Ross to launch a new paper. McMillen plans to print in Covington and distribute from Newtown post office. Local business leaders’ support could determine whether the plan proceeds.
Purdue University schedules a two day alfalfa auto tour in Fountain County during the last week of May with an on site alfalfa expert leading discussions. Farmers are urged to participate and join the county plot stops by arranging car shares while awaiting the exact date.
C W Lusk brother of the deceased John Lusk has filed a petition in Parke county circuit court through attorney N M Teagarden to partition the Lusk lands. The court may order sale of the wooded tract and the state could become owner of the property per Veedersburg News.
The Kingman Commercial Club held a regular session last Friday night with enthusiastic participation. Efforts to revive interest are underway and all members are urged to attend the next meeting. Charley Taylor visited from Hillsboro on Monday.
Mr and Mrs George W Hesler of two miles south of Hillsboro announce the engagement of their daughter Olcie May Hesler to Rev B F Clifton pastor of the M E church at Hillsboro The wedding will be in the Hillsboro M E church late June Miss Hesler was a teacher in local schools last year and is praised for her pleasing conduct Rev Clifton is in his second year as local pastor and also serves the Salem M E church He has been admitted to the Fountain county bar.
Mrs Everett Ratcliff and the Misses Nina Hershbarger Velya Moore and Ola Ratcliff hosted a miscellaneous shower at Miss Hershbarger's home Tuesday evening for Mrs Cecil Moore Keefer. Thirty seven ladies attended bringing many useful and beautiful presents. The home and a chair were decorated with bridal wreath flowers. The evening featured simple games and light refreshments.
A baseball league has been formed by ball teams in Fountain and Montgomery counties proposing to offer good contests this season. The six towns in the league are Covington Veedersburg Mellett Wingate Linden and Crawfordsville.
Township assessors will report to county assessors on Saturday May 15. On Monday June 7 the county board of review will begin equalizing the county appraisements. The board will also appraise county corporations including banks, telephone companies, railroads and other stock companies.
County reports show Hesian fly damage in parts of the community wheat fields. Despite early signs, damage is not alarming and growers anticipate a bumper wheat and oats harvest this year.
