Kingman residents debate the new east end State street improvement after fourteen cars became mired in soft gravel. Anger and criticism rise while the town contemplates fixes or condemnation and possible temporary closures of adjacent streets. The council vows action to resolve the disruption.
The Bonebrake family held its annual reunion at Cornelius Bonebrake’s home north of Yeddo drawing one of the largest crowds in history. Attendees arrived by automobile as early as morning and picnicked on long tables filled with food before a rain shower paused the event. Cornelius, age eighty six, was honored on his birthday weekend, continuing a custom of gathering near his date each year.
Col A G Madden criticized our railroad during a Tuesday call claiming a Ford car on their line and a Ford equipped with flanged wheels on the Clover Leaf line. Veedersburg boosters promoted chautauqua near Hub park with Ellis Brook’s orchestra as a headliner.
Fountain county fair grounds hosts four main events on July 28 with entrants including the Cornelian car by Louis Chevrolet and Shawmbaugh driven by Kirkpatrick. The program offers 15 and 25 mile auto races plus a motorcycle event with prizes from 5 to 50 dollars and 25 cent admission.
Kinmgan people show growing interest in union meetings with large Sunday night attendance at the Christian church. Rev. John Mellott, founder of the town of Mellott in Fountain County, died Friday evening at his home after a day of normal health. He was about 75, survived by his wife and son W. T. Mellott of Sullivan. Born in Randolph County, he moved to the area in 1865 and helped build Mellott, serving in hardware and running the post office before retiring due to ill health.
A Sunday afternoon gathering at Rufus Dotson’s home near Harvestsburg brought a warm surprise. Family friends including John and Linda Cindley Roy Lindley Paul Keller Deal Helms David Dotson and others celebrated Dotson’s 50th birthday with ice cream cake and well wishes. He joked that his birthday could come every Sunday in the heat.
Nellie Bonebrake announces a new line of hats for ladies in white satin kid and velvet with caps for girls. Trich bands and pon pon styles are highlighted and calls are appreciated.
Last Sunday afternoon the Cayuga ball team faced Kingman in three innings before rain halted play with Kingman leading 2 to 0. Cayuga had not recorded a hit when the game stopped. Clarence Teague died at his Grange Corner home after a typhoid illness, mourned by many friends. J M Wolf visited from Danville Illinois for a week. Miss Gleela McAlister visited relatives in Veedersburg Monday.
Kingman Telephone Co owned by C. L. Steinbaugh & Son faced protests after a toll rule change last week. Steinbaugh consulted the Public Utilities Commission in Indianapolis and imposed charges on non subscribers while offering limited free information calls. locals fret over 10 cent calls to other exchanges and plan to curb truck-line visits to five minutes.
Kingman hosted its largest crowd of the season for a Saturday night concert with many shopping and automotive scenes along the street. The band, positioned on the street crossing, noted the growing audience and cars, and pledged a new program lineup each Saturday. Kingman invites locals and area shoppers to attend and support merchants.
Sheriff Nicholas traveled to Locke Washington last Friday to seize Walter McGill held on a child desertion charge. McGill, formerly of West Union and Vermillion county, is tracked by his wife who filed for divorce and cites three children. McGill’s mother lives in Locke and was with him during arrest as authorities seek to compel support.
