A ferocious Saturday rainstorm drenched Kingman with at least four inches of rain from 4 PM to after 9 PM. Crops especially oats wheat and hay suffered heavy damage while the Wabash river and creeks overflowed. Telegraph lines trains and通讯 were disrupted with repairs delayed.
The Attica Chautauqua enters its sixth year opening August 9 and ending August 18. Attica offers over fifty high class entertainments with lectures and dramatic readings by renowned interpreters. Ravine Park hosts a tent city of a hundred tents and a $3 590 program, with tickets and schedules available from H W Newlin and E D Robison.
County Clerk Leroy Sanders issued a marriage license on Tuesday morning to Simon LaBaw aged 71 and Susie Hudson aged 54. LaBaw, a longtime Shawnee township farmer noted for wealth, was widowed. Hudson is described as an estimable Newton woman. The couple will reside in Attica, where LaBaw bought a fine dwelling.
Mrs. Felix Bowers, 68, fell at her northeast of here home last Sunday morning breaking a bone just below the hip joint. The injury is very painful and may slow healing. Miss Audrey McCord of Veedersburg visited over Sunday. Fred Coffing sustained a fractured wrist while pitching hay on Wednesday.
Mrs R B Myers visited Terre Haute with her parents from Wednesday to Saturday. Harrison Hickman of Attica stayed with his daughter from Friday to Monday. Mrs Harrison Hickman and Jas McKinzie from Attica visited the editor and wife last week. The Kingman Hardware Co delivered a Wagner motorcycle to Everettiger. Pearl Thompson and wife welcomed a fine boy baby early Tuesday. Miss Louise Baker arrived from Cincinnati to visit friends. Miss Olive Gillum visits Bertha Teague this week. A moving picture show plays at the opera house every Saturday. Dr Hester and wife visited from Bloomingdale on Tuesday.
A readable program lists two step and waltz titles such as Everybody's Doin It Now and Cupids Charms, plus solos Vandersloot Bell and Elbert R. Gilford, and marches Alexander's Ragtime Band and Progressive American. The set features serades and overtures including Love's Response and Criterion.
Mrs. Rebecca Gray was pleasantly surprised by relatives and friends on Sunday in Wingate area as daughter Blanche organized a birthday gathering. Guests included the Gray and Newman families and Atkinson and Wisma relatives from nearby towns. A noon meal followed by music and social time, with wishes for many more happy birthdays.
Paving began on the east end of section two of State street last Saturday with a brock in progress. Heavy rains caused delays but contractors aim to pave one block soon and finish the rest before cold weather. The first story of the school house is up and carpenters will start the second story after completion.
The Rockville Chautauqua program promises strong crowds with two headline Sundays. August 11 features William Jennings Bryan and August 18 features Booker T. Washington. The event runs August 9 through August 18.

The U B Sunday school picnic near John T. Lindley’s Millcreek home featured a kingly noon dinner. Amid enjoyable moments a drowning scare involving Oran Barker Gordon and Clifton Sowers prompted a rescue when Barker clung to a plank as heavy rains fed deep water. Barker was saved by the plank before others could help.
The late Elon H Count of Covington sold his bank stock in a private sale to local buyers. Mellott bank stock ten shares went to John Moore of Mellott at 135 dollars net. Fountain Trust Co stock twenty three shares sold at 105 dollars net among J Loeb Elisha Lacy J B Schwin and Henry Dicken. First National Bank stock twenty shares sold to Loeb at 130 dollars net and later divided among several parties including Lena Sewell Dr Barnes W W Lawton and others. Court expected to approve the sales.
The thirty fourth annual Old Settlers Meeting will take place on Thursday, August 15, in the grove one mile south of Yeddo. A usual good program is promised and organizers expect the largest crowd in the history of the event.
Dr A A Williamson has sold his office and fixtures in Indianapolis and next week will move his family and household effects to Veedersburg where he will locate. Rev Sarah McKey and daughter from Marshall visited recently with Mr and Mrs C H Ratcliff Miss Della Reichard from Urbana Ill arrived Wednesday to visit Miss Ethel Cox.
A customer seeks a saw in an Oklahoma shop and learns the price. The dealer offers mail-order terms from Sears for 1.35 but insists immediate cash. The man pays postage, money order, and expressage totaling 1.67, noting the delay and extra cost versus paying the shop price.
The Sugar Creek Township Alumni Association will host its seventeenth annual banquet Saturday evening July 27 at Friends Union Church. The event promises a festive program with welcome to the Class of 1919, a graduation music class history, Cecil Lundgren’s annual address and Dr E E Ewbank talk, followed by officer election and supper.

Clover Leaf Railway officials discussed leasing the 1400 foot Lodi Artesian Well from its owner in hopes of founding a major sanitarium. The well, famed for its rheumatism cure, has long attracted visitors who swim, picnic, and collect the milky water shipped nationwide.
Virgil Sanders was on the sick list at the start of the week but is expected to resume duties soon as a clerk at McCrary's Store.
