A late season social highlight, the Junior Senior banquet at the Kingman hotel featured ornate color schemes, flower decor, and furniture. Miss Estel Duncan provided piano music as guests enjoyed a five course supper served by George Madden and Clifton Sowers, with about twenty seven attendees praising the event.
World heavyweight champion Jess Willard will be shown in a 1000 foot film at Kingman Opera House next Wednesday night April 28. This special program features Willard in training bouts and costs 10 and 20 cents for one night only plus two extra reels including a comedy. Kingman marks the nineteenth Indiana town to screen the feature.
Dean Craft of Indianapolis, praised for his piano tuning here last year, will return the second week in May. Recommended by Mrs. F. R. Jones, those wishing tuning services can leave orders at The Star office.
Notice to Alumni Members announces a special meeting of the Kingman High School Alumni Association at the school building next Monday night April 19. All members urged to attend. Worley King, President.
E R Guilford, expert trap drummer, will leave next Wednesday for Bloomington to join the Gentry Brothers No 1 show. He will play under Harry Crigler on an eight month season that includes a visit to the International Panama Exposition. The writer notes Guilford as an excellent drummer and expects good performances. Also advertisement for house paints from 1.60 to 2.00 per gallon by Kingman Hdwe Co.
Miss Elizabeth Sonar of the State Library Board and Miss Fanny Hill of the University of Illinois Library Board have arranged a formal opening for the Kingman Public Library. Books are classified, access is free, and loans follow ordinary conditions. donations are welcome to expand the collection.
Dirt excavated from street improvements is used to fill the school grounds. A grade level will be established, walks completed, and grass seed sown to develop a beautiful campus. The project is promoted by a committee appointed by the Commercial Club.
Mr Theodore Moore arrives in Indiana to assume superintendent and secretary treasurer roles at Benton Review Printing Co in Fowler after leaving Lodi California. Friends Kingman area note his return and success in publishing. Other local moves include Frank Jones family leaving Crawfordsville and Ruth Farr with Nellie Madden visiting Pine Village, plus Hazel Thompson’s Williamsport return and Levi Irvin's Florida visit.
The graduating class of 1915 shows 100 percent plans for higher education with twelve students receiving diplomas on April 23. The article extols sustained effort, self restraint, and community support, praising both students and faculty for a superior high school record and continued learning beyond graduation.
Auditor Crittenberger announces Leroy Sanders of Covington named examiner for the state building and loan department. He succeeds Isaac Dunn of Jeffersonville, whose term expires April 31. Sanders, former Fountain Circuit Court clerk, was backed by W. B. Reed of Attica, president of the State Building and Loan Association League.
The Needleworkers Club gathered Wednesday afternoon with seven members due to the busy season. Light refreshments were served. Mrs. J. T. Redman and daughter Reeva of Covington visited until Thursday with her mother Mrs. M. P. Rowlett. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Metsker now reside in Kingman at the Ratcliff property on Vine street. Etta Hersbarger attended R N A Lodge at Yeddo yesterday. C. L. Woody and Ola Judy came from Judyville Tuesday. H. L. Scott was in Cayuga Sunday.
I Sowers, a skilled machinist, designs a 32 HP vertical engine to burn coal oil or gasoline. It features two large cylinders and stands over six feet tall. Plans were drafted in winter, patterns prepared, to be cast by a foundry. He aims to power an electric generator to supply Kingman with electric lights soon.
A Rhode Island Red chick hatched Monday with four fully developed legs astonishes Mrs. Hattie Cates and neighbors. The extra pair is harmless but useless, yet the chick remains spry and eats heartily as the press time nears.
The Bank of Kingman will overhaul its interior with new fixtures and furniture bought from Covington Bank. Installation is planned for the first of the week, changing the look and making the bank comparable to top institutions in the country.
Miss Kathryn Nason of Terre Haute accepts the vacancy as assistant and stenographer in C. E. Lambert's abstract office. She is recent business college graduate, recommended by Geo W. Spencer, Rockville Republican, chief deputy under Revenue Collector Strouse. The U B Ladies Aid Society met with large attendance and added nine new members to a 39 member roster. Bill Drake leases Fay Cook's picture gallery and plans summer pictures, with a competitive price list. Bear Brand hosiery display draws attention at C L Steinbaugh & Son's. Reverend Orley Smith to preach at Friends church and Rush Creek next Sunday. Col A G Madden was in the county seat Friday.
The Tangier Women s Relief Corps held its 50th anniversary of Lee s surrender at Appomattox last Saturday in the Liberty township high school auditorium. Dr Gillum of Rockville spoke on Civil War events and Indiana s role, highlighting Yorktown and Appomattox and recalling the first and last casualties from Indiana.
H. J. McAlister has repapered his ice cream parlor and cigar store and is now open for the ice cream season. He prepared the shop to look as cozy as possible for ladies. Pearl Keerns was called to Danville Illinois yesterday by his mother's serious illness. Vern Barker and Frank Myer visited from New Richmond on Sunday.
