The allocations committee approved a revised MU budget cutting about 200 from the Men's union and restoring 100 to band orchestra glee club and choir for Burr pictures. Fall winter and spring banquet costs and Messiah cancellation influenced allocations.
Scholarships were granted to 26 freshmen and eight upperclassmen, with 40 former scholars retaining awards. Freshmen earning general scholarships include Dorothy Anderson, Janet Crawford, Barbara Ewell, Virginia Fagley, Donna Harris, Marie Heupel, June Hirka, Lucille Hyman, Ellen Johnson, James Kenski, Peggy Jo King, Sonia Manhall, Antoinette Mittiga, Jean Mulford, Ruth Reed, Gloria Sherrets, Elizabeth Steve, Gertrude Van Horn, Dorothy Watson, and Eileen Young. Special awards went to Marilyn Snyder, Rosemary Crzincic, Dorothy Rusnak, Elizabeth Beer, Julia Ross, and Patricia West. Sophomore general scholars include Audrey Farnshell, Martha Riley, Truth Sumner, Marian Zapka, with Janet Morrow and Robert Lengacher noted for journalism. Arlene Riggle received the only junior scholarship, and Norma Knisely the senior scholarship in journalism.
Poor response to an appeal for singers forces cancellation of Handel Messiah plans at the university. A 100 member chorus was to sing December 16 with 60 women and 40 men. only 29 women and 5 men volunteered. The university will instead present a 40 member civic university orchestra concert on the same date with a guest soloist likely.
Urban Sociology 378 students will tour a Kirestone Tire rim plant in Akron today. Professor William H. Form says the visit will let students observe mass production technique and factory working conditions in a production division.
All juniors and seniors who have not yet had their Burr pictures taken must go to room 303 Kent Hall today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is the last day for photo sessions. Those photographed on Oct 16 may pick up proofs today. others may pick up proofs Monday.
Ingrid Tornberg of WL notes higher funding needs due to enrolment growth. Friedland urges using Messiah money for new band uniforms, worn for 11 years, costing about 3 500 dollars. Committee allocates remaining funds to a control fund despite Friedland's request and Phillips' 2 000 dollar football equipment estimate.
Under enrolment chairman Arlene Sterling the American Women's Volunteer Service chapter launches a member drive starting Monday October 22. The drive runs next week to re enroll former members and recruit newcomers. Dorothy Watson and Gladys Ulch lead as co chairs with dues of 1 dollar yearly payable at enrollment. Meetings are the first and third Tuesday in Room 108 Kent hall.
Theta Sigma Upsilon sorority sponsors the first tea dance this afternoon from 4 to 5 30 in Room 119 Kent Hall. Greek organizations will coordinate the bi monthly event featuring popular records and refreshments.
Five student assistantships for the fall quarter were awarded to chemistry and physics majors, the first since four years. Four chemistry assistants and one physics assistant will supervise beginning laboratory courses, due to large class sizes of about thirty students. Dr. Will S. Thompson noted the need for additional supervision.
KSRW will broadcast from campus studios this year, says workshop head Mrs. Opal Boffo. Equipment checks due in three weeks. broadcasting waits until verification. Allocations funds a telephone line from Radio Workshop studios to WAKR Akron to enable campus broadcasts.
Robert Frost, four time Pulitzer Prize poetry winner, will be guest speaker at 8:15 p.m. Monday in the university auditorium. The 70 year old poet, educated at Dartmouth and Harvard with honorary degrees from Yale Columbia Bowdoin Michigan and Pennsylvania, published Boy's Will in 1913 and North of Boston in 1914.
Rockwell library will close at 8 p m on Monday October 22 for a Robert Frost reading announced by head librarian John D Nicholson awards include 1931 1937 1943 Mark Twain medal and Levies prize. Dr Frost has taught poetry at Harvard since 1936 and his latest works are Witness Tree 1942 and Come In edited by Louis Untermeyer 1943.
Rollie Gamble's orchestra from Cuyahoga Falls will play at the Independent Student Association dance Saturday Oct. 27 in Wills Gym from 8 30 p m to 12. Admission is 125 per couple with tickets on sale in the atrium Monday. Women in street length dresses or men in tuxedos are not admitted as a protective measure. Formal events may be planned later for those who own dress clothes. The dance is sponsored by the ISA and open to all university students.
Twenty seven freshmen from a class of about 650, with high scores on the English placement test, are exempted from half of the freshman English requirement and placed in a special advanced class. The group includes Betty J. Abbott, Helen L. Altman, Elizabeth M. Beer, Lucille M. Bidlack, Patricia M. Casto, Josephine R. Cook, Alan D. Daniels, and others.
