Dean Earl W. Crecraft Hosts CBS Commentator in Kent Visit

Elmer Davis ace CBS newsman will speak at the Akron Civic Forum November 7 and visit with his Kent State journalism classmate Dean Earl W. Crecraft. Davis will ride from Akron to Crecraft’s home for a bull session with students before returning to Cleveland that night. Both men are from Aurora Indiana and were college classmates in Franklin.

Secondary Pilots Begin Advanced Training Today

Ten men selected to enroll in the secondary course of the Civilian Training program commence training today per Director Adrian Van Wyen. Selection was by a special board of primary flight instructors based on flying ability ground school and scholastic standing. Harter Quizzed On War and ROTC on Campus

Congressman Don Harter rejected the idea of sending American men abroad for war saying manpower is not needed but material resources are. He predicted ROTC may come to Kent when officer shortages ease and noted college men could advance to officer training. He warned invasion of the Western Hemisphere is possible and described hardening recruits in initial training with ample equipment and housing.

Blue Key, the men's honorary fraternity, will meet this evening at six for a dinner meeting at the Robinhood to nominate new members and review plans for the National Biennial convention on the Kent campus this year as stated by President Hal Serne.

Conscripted Students May Defer Training and Draft Board Lead

Conscription begins with 21 to 35 year olds registering today. College deferment until 1940 is possible for those conscripted, with Kent and Portage county boards organized under Dr. J O Engleman. A volunteer law opens service to those 18 to 35, with physical and mental tests for all selectees. Conscientious objectors face interviews to determine true status as the draft aims to train four million men by 1946.

Thomas Todd Appleby, 28, telegraph operator for Wheeling and Lake Erie, attends Kent State University class of 1944 and lives with 21-year-old wife who keeps the home fires burning. He hails from Massillon and she from Akron, both fresh from high school. Her brother Edward Vaughn, 18, is also a freshman.
