Students faculty and alumni attend the annual Homecoming dance in Wills gymnasium from 9 to 12 Saturday evening. Admission requires activity or fee cards. Guests obtain tickets from the dean of women and alumni from the atrium.
Jack Harris announced a three member panel to judge Homecoming house decorations for fraternities sororities and dorms. Dean Mary L. Smallwood Dean Raymond E. Manchester and Prof. E W Tischendorf will evaluate originality effort and appropriateness. Deadline is noon Saturday.
After 17 years away the Sheik Raphael Emmanuel returns to Kent for a lecture and return engagement. Dr. D W Pearce warns that anyone absenting themselves from the October 15 assembly will be the loser. Emmanuel, a Chal de an native scholar, will speak on geographical social and historical topics.
Miss Bertha Whitton, women's physical education instructor, organized her HPE class to clear the women’s athletic field after repeated requests failed. WPA players Louise Reitzel Jane Stroup Margaret Clark and Mary Ellen Koontz participated in the effort.
First nighters witnessed the University theater debut of The Melting Pot by Israel Zangwill, a four act drama on race prejudice set in New York. Director Prof. E Turner Stump calls it timely again as ten years ago. Cast members Bill Guisewite Kitty Liptak Opal Wigner Shirley Sacks and James Muzzy delivered strong performances despite colds. Show runs tonight and tomorrow at 8 15 in the university auditorium.
The Willkie for President club held elections with Bill Ortt elected president Fred Prasse as vice president Geraldine Brown as secretary and Frank Croft as treasurer. President Leebrick urged turnout and a telegram from Joseph Martin Jr praised the campus Willkie organization and Wendell Willkie’s inspirational presidency.
Latest figures from registrar E. C. Stopher show as of October 8 that 1,454 men are enrolled versus 1,242 women, a lead of 212 for men.
Two partyless candidates, Carl Ellis and Pete Pavkov, edge toward junior and freshman presidencies. Pavkov, from Akron, passed out lollypops in the freshman dorms with a vote for Pete Parkor message. Ellis, Canton native and marketing major, hints at possible campaign tricks as they insist they can win and outline plans after election.
Voting for student elections will take place today at the book exchange on the first floor of Kent Hall. No one will be allowed to vote without a fee card or other adequate identification.
Elizabeth Tucker and Martha Galloway discuss the 1940 Homecoming queen contest and social fashion. Martha favors comfort of skirts and sweaters while Elizabeth urges dressy wear for social events, noting the need for balance between curricular and social life. Both students share dorm memories and academic goals at the University.
President and Mrs. K C Leebrick will attend the Ohio College President's meeting at the Granville Inn in Granville Ohio today and Friday. While Dr Leebrick attends meetings Mrs Leebrick will lead a discussion on the relationship between a president's wife and the community.
A student poll on voting splits shows unaffiliated and Greek students leaning toward split ballots in today’s election. Carl Ellis pursues a non partisan junior class president bid while others favor straight tickets due to perceived qualifications on the Greek ticket.
John L. Blair of the College of Education will address the Ohio Library Association meeting Saturday morning via Youngstown. His talk asks what is the complete function of the library in the community's educational program as visualized by an educator.
