President George A. Bowman announced the first step in a two million dollar university expansion. Bids will be sought for a 500000 dollar men’s dormitory and 500000 dollar student union building, with an industrial arts building and a 50 bed hospital to follow.
Last year’s figure nearly quadrupled with a record 4,814 students starting classes. Freshman enrollment neared the old high of 2,703 set in 1940. Including Canton branch and other registrants the total may reach about 5,653 with veterans about 3,890, a large share of the student body.
Student council will meet on Monday October 7 at 4 p.m. in Merrill Hall per president Hank Johnston. They will discuss homecoming queen elections and other business. Treasurer George Insche said department requisitioning agents should begin budgets now. an allocations meeting will be scheduled next week.
The Chestnut Burr announces a staff meeting at 4 p.m. Monday October 7 in room 113 Merrill Hall. Photographers copy editors section editors and makeup men are needed.
Registration at the school for Gym Jam faced long lines and delays described as the worst in the school's history. Students reported bottlenecks at entry points and limited staff assistance during peak hours.
Women students will collect pennies starting Monday to fund Staters sent to university men and women in military service. War era practice funded postage and expenses through penny drives and donations. July 1946 mailings reached 650.
Tryouts for the freshman play East Lynne are set for Monday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Freshmen may pick up books in the speech department room 314 Kent Hall.
Four leading beaneries report heavy campus crowds at noon and night with no waitresses available. A manager near the campus says they turn away 150 students while Helen Arthur the university cafeteria dietitian notes diners are 20 to 30 minutes over time. She remains optimistic students will seek cafeteria jobs.
Veterans who received subsistence checks for September should use them. Veterans affairs advisor Mike Urda notes some will be eliminated from the check rolls for a month as the VA catches up on records.
The Inter-Religious Council led by Bob White sponsored a convocation night event where Dr. Joseph Politella explained this year's religious study program. Students met ministers from various faiths and were invited to church gatherings across local churches.
Matt Fenn was reelected president of Chi Pi, the men's honorary journalism fraternity, at a meeting held yesterday. Roy Apple was chosen vice president, Russ Gillis secretary, Jay Gossett treasurer, and Bob Casey corresponding secretary.
The K-Vets gather for the first fall quarter meeting on Wednesday October 9 at 7 pm in room 317 McGilvrey Hall. All veterans are urged to attend as plans for the coming year are discussed. The group is the campus veterans organization affiliated with the Ohio Federation of University Veterans.

The university school of journalism received an All American award certificate for Kent Staters edited during 1945 46 under Norma Kinsley June graduate. The certificate issued by the Associated Press of Newspaper Critical Service is the highest rating from this organization.
University auto registration reaches 1675 with 1775 cars to fit into 483 spaces 310 student and 173 special permit. Fall 693 cars include 27 women. Parking rules list no parking behind the library front drive Kent or Merrill halls. Suggested lots include Moulton hall heating plant back drive and city side streets.
