Judge Walter Wanamaker of the common pleas court in Akron will be the principal speaker at an Armistice Day assembly in the University auditorium at 10 am. The program opens with the national anthem and flag pledge. Thirteen World War I veterans among faculty will be honored.
James N. Holm announces the Kent forensics schedule for the year. The first home contest on Saturday December 2 hosts the Northeastern Ohio Debate conference novice and varsity teams. The Ohio Women s Conference tourney follows December 8 to 9 at Capital University in Columbus.
The University civic orchestra elected Louis Fink as president with Maurice Foote as vice-president and Roy E Metcalf announcing Jean Black as secretary. Agnes Sawyer is librarian, Jean Kutzleman as assistant. The group, of 38 members, meets Wednesdays and considers forming a theater orchestra next quarter if string personnel allow.
Dorothy Watson was elected secretary of the American Women's Volunteer Service at a Wednesday meeting. Betsey Case and Lorna LaVand, co chairmen, announced the appointments of Arlene Sterling as publicity chair and Francis Ellen heading the blood donors committee. Other chairs include Dorothy Wakeman for war stamp sales and Gladys Ulch for ways and means.
Calling All Vets announces a Veterans organization meeting Monday November 13 at 4 pm in room 108 Kent hall. Officers will be elected and important issues discussed with a memorial program honoring veterans of both wars and those missing in action or prisoners of war. The University band performs at 11 with taps followed by silent prayer and attendance is required as classes are excused.
Final program released for the inauguration on Saturday November 18 with Dr. Howard L. Bevis of Ohio State University as principal speaker. Gov. and Mrs. Bricker invited. other guests include Kenneth C. Ray and university leaders. Luncheons at 11:30 and 11:45, procession at 1, oath at 1:15, reception 3 to 5, faculty reception 8 to 10.
In Dogpatch Kentucky on November 17 1944 Mister Dan Warcowski announces a Sadie Hawkins style event with a public dance from nine to one and live music by Bernie May and his Moonshiners. Judge Miss Eelane Chameburlan and Mister Murray Powers oversee costumes as residents prepare decorative displays and prizes.
President George A. Bowman will address members of the Kent chapter of the American Association of University Professors on November 17 at 8 p.m. in room 317 McGilvrey. Dr. Harry Cunningham chairs the event and notes it is open to all members.
President George A. Bowman appointed John W. Kaiser mathematics instructor as faculty manager of varsity athletics. Kaiser joined the faculty in 1940 and has served on the athletic policy committee since 1943. The university aims to appoint basketball and wrestling coaches soon.
Dr. Les ter H Munzenmayer announced the return of regular dinner service in University dining halls. Meals would be served by student help each evening and Sunday noon if available. Thirty three students are needed. any man or woman wishing to work should stop at the appointments office.
December 1 mentions the U S Veterans Administration rule barring veterans from varsity athletics under the program. The president notes a shortage of basketball players with college experience now at the University. Kaiser's role as faculty athletic manager will include scheduling games and coordinating with other schools on sports matters.
John Williamson of Blue Key announces a booster assembly on November 15 at 11 a.m. to revive varsity sports at the University. The event features pledge cards, University band, new cheerleaders, and sale of Athletic Association membership cards. Patron tickets for townspeople are planned.
Dr. H. D. Byrne head of the department of political science was elected state senator for the 96th General assembly from the 24 26 state senatorial district on Tuesday. Running on the Democratic ticket he won with an 8000 majority and previously served in the 92nd assembly 1937 38, helping secure several appropriations for the University. He has not announced leaving for the assembly which convenes in January at Columbus.
George Yamashiro enters a Japanese American unit at Camp Atterbury Indiana. He began at Kent State in 1944 after a Utah relocation center transfer. His brothers Fred and Henry serve in Camp Hood Texas and Fort Devers Massachusetts. His cousin Hiroshi is in the southwest Pacific with army intelligence. Another brother-in-law serves overseas in France. Miss Yamashiro is a senior at Kent State.
Richard and sister Yoshiye live in Utah where the whole family resided before George moved to Kent. Yamashiro, sworn into the army in July and awaiting orders from Fort Hayes, may yet return to the University.
Community singers and university students joining the regular A Capella choir should attend the first rehearsal for singers at 3:00 PM on Monday November 13 in room 309 Kent Hall.
