The junior class social committee set rules for the Prom Queen contest. Candidates from all groups may enter if they meet two point GPA and quarterly averages, are juniors or seniors, and submit entries by 4 p.m. May 13. Preliminary judging will occur next week, with the winner chosen by ticket holders at the May 29 Moonlight Ballroom dance in Canton.
Dr. Ralph Himstead general secretary of the AAUP will address the Kent State chapter dinner at the Robin Hood tonight. His topic Proposition Is Professional caps the quarterly session. Himstead arrives from Washington DC headquarters and twenty chapter representatives attend. Ray Wenger chairs the program committee and Kent State president is Prof. Dwight Arnold.
Soprano Lorna Adams will present her senior recital next Monday at 8 15 p m in the Union Ballroom. The program includes Italian French German and English songs with Prophecy by Harold Miles of the Kent music department. Piano support by Pat Pou a Juilliard graduate. Adams, ex New England Conservatory, studies with Robert Hull Foulkers and appeared as a Messiah soloist last year.
Kent State University symphony orchestra directed by Louis P. Erch will give a concert Sunday May 11 at 3 p.m. in the Auditorium. Senior organ soloist Robert Wolfe, son of Akron residents William and Mrs. Wolfe, will perform. Program includes Schubert Unfinished Symphony Slavonic Dances by Dvorak and Szell Copland Rodeo excerpts and Rossini Semiramide Operature. Sponsored by the KSU school of music.
KSU Women’s Athletic Association sponsors the annual Play Day for 200 northeastern Ohio junior and senior high school women. Student co chairmen are Shirley Welker and Donna Bell.
The pre medical aptitude test time has been changed by the Education Testing Service. The exam may be taken in the morning or afternoon of May 12 in 303 A Kent Hall instead of University Training School as originally stated.
Kent State raised 718 dollars for the World Student Service Fund. Delta Upsilon top fraternities with 47.49 and Chi Omega led sororities with 36.50, totaling 320 in the box. Over 700 students donated 258 to support activities and protests, Penny Carnival added 100, Wesley foundation 40. Ron Rice thanks Greek groups professors and students. last year’s drive reached 1000, a decline attributed to enrollment drop.
Kent State University trustees approved the re appointment of 334 faculty and staff for the next year with 10 positions dropped due to enrollment decline. Salary levels rise for the sixth straight year, averaging about 570 per person over the 1951 52 and 1952 53 periods. Room rates increase from fall term with singles rising to 54 and doubles to 48 per person, while board rates stay unchanged. First faculty member recalled from Korea, Prof Easterling, returns to biology post, and new hires include a language instructor and three military staff. Leon Twarog to teach Russia. three air science and tactics instructors added.
Journalism students will receive more than 70 awards at the annual publications banquet in the Union ballroom. Frank Siedel will be main speaker with Kenny Nichols as toastmaster. Prof. William Taylor will present awards, including the Paul Ryan Achievement Cup, the Lincoln Hackim Award, and the Matt Fenn Trophy.
Basil Rathbone the Sherlock Holmes star will tour the nation to meet audiences, promoting theatre stories and dramatic performances. Born in Johannesburg, Rathbone began on stage at 18 and later triumphed on Broadway in Jane. He has performed with the Philadelphia Symphony and earned praise at Carnegie Hall.
The International Relations club announces the second annual International ball on May 30 from 9 to 1. Don McCarthy and his orchestra will provide the music under the stars, with rain contingency on the cafeteria. Proceeds go to the foreign student scholarship fund to aid future campus guests. Tickets cost 80 cents and include refreshments and a floor show.
