Two University students enrolled in an evening oxy-acetylene welding course are pictured. The course will be repeated next quarter with Elbert W. Tischendorf, associate professor of industrial arts, instructing. The exact start date will be announced later.
University men may take qualifying exams for the Army specialized training and Naval V-12 programs on Friday April 2. Applicants aged 17 to 22 who have high school diplomas may apply without college attendance. Exams in room 317 McGilvrey Hall from 9 to 11 a m EWT. forms available in room 303 Merrill Hall.
Beta groups lead annual penny drive with Alpha Phi Beta under John Salisbury collecting funds aided by Harvey Reger and George Krebs. Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority adds to the total, reaching 82.62 after its third campaign, with 13.90 collected last week.
Mildred McCue, manager of the university book store, announced fittings for senior caps and gowns will be held tomorrow. A two dollar cap and gown fee and 30 cents per white collar must be paid at that time.
Kent students employed at Atlas Powder will be restricted from afternoon and midnight shifts after Friday March 19. All workers must regularly cover Saturday and Sunday. For illness or emergencies, notify Mr Tracy of the CBS office by postcard or telephone.
No pre registration this quarter for next quarter and no printed schedules handed out after vacation says registrar E. C. Stopher. Students should leave blue books and self addressed envelopes in the registrar office before vacation to receive a copy of their grades.
Three courses will be offered next quarter in Industrial arts aimed at women planning war work or service. Industrial drawing IA 180 teaches industrial drawing used in industry. Industrial-S A 295 trains students to inspect commercial products before ordnance inspection. Motor Mechanics-S A 296 repeats a course with 23 of 25 women completing it last quarter.
The all senior convocation will be a variety show with Earl Vacaria as master of ceremonies. Gene Beecher and his eight piece Cleveland orchestra will play for the formal senior dance Friday at 10 p m in Moulton hall music room. Elaine Castle will be vocalist.
University faculty and staff contributed to the Red Cross fundraiser with $90 added yesterday bringing the tally to $890. Donations included $25 from Lowryhall Moulton and Kappa Delta Pi while most gifts came from individuals. No money has yet been received from sororities fraternities or off campus groups who have pledged.
A noncredit camouflage course will run weekly for 12 weeks in the next quarter. Fren Musselman, dean of summer session and extension courses, announced the course open to students and townspeople. A five dollar fee will be charged.
The University library will close at 5 p m Friday and reopen at 9 a m Monday March 29. Books may be borrowed for vacation only before 5 p m Friday. Grades will not be issued to students who fail to return books issued for this quarter.
University Theatre rushes Letters to Lucerne for April 8 and 9 production. E Turner E Stump directs as veterans Kitty Liptak and Marty Galloway graduate in June. Newcomers Dorothy Wolff Suzanne Schwartz join Mary Haines Stella Greenbaum Carol Richards Bob Telford Wilbur Adams.
25 of 50 rooms for homeless coeds were available yesterday per Phyllis Pearson. Kent citizens offered rooms easing the housing emergency after dormitories closed to women students. Of 395 displaced, 325 found rooms and 20 will commute next quarter. Delta Phi Sigma may turn its 262 Columbus Street house over to girls this week.
Oberlin college won eight of eight debates to claim first place at the University Forensic tournament held Saturday. Kent two some team of Don Wargowsky and Herb Myers were the only other undefeated unit. Winners received certificates of merit and Adelaide Snyder plus five visiting students earned extemporaneous speaking citations as almost 100 attendees watched.
