In Tempe 1902 a barefoot boy sought an education at the Territorial Normal School. Karl Leebrick, later Kent State president, returned 47 years later to address 1200 Arizona State Teachers College students urging ongoing education to defend democracy and predict the fall of dictatorships.

Kent State Graduate Killed in Army Plane Crash
Second Lieutenant Wilmer Munzenmayer, Kent State University graduate, was killed when his Servesky P35 fighter crashed and burned during routine maneuvers near Selfridge Field Michigan. He was 22 and a member of the 39th pursuit squadron led by Captain Alan Springer. An immediate Army air investigation was announced.
