Kobie Norbert, a freshman in the college of education, and Earle Knowles, a sophomore in the college of liberal arts, have received calls to report for active duty in the United States armed forces today.
Bernie Harris, a junior in the college of liberal arts, was named chairman of the Coalition party yesterday following Hope Byrne's resignation. Byrne stepped down after advancing to the presidency of the Student Council.
Four university debaters plus James N. Holm director of forensics attend the Ohio conference in Columbus at Capitol University over today and tomorrow. Don Wargowsky and Harold Stern uphold the affirmative on federation for the United Nations. Stern and Wargowsky previously won the Pittsburgh Debate conference in January and led five of ten debates in the Manchester tournament in Indiana last week. Bob Beckwith and Scheffer Pierce debate the negative with Holm serving as judge.
Kent State University politics feature two student groups nominating “most popular” candidates. The campus scene includes The Saturday Letter by Dean Raymond Manchester praising the dean’s birthday and his role in campus life.
The University band directed by Roy D. Metcalf will present patriotic numbers at 11 o clock EWT with a war songs focus from 1918 to today. The sax quartet of Flynn Dingledine Shaheen and Irmiter will perform Saxaphone Symphonette. The band has grown from 12 to 42 pieces since 1928, peaking at 108 in 1941.
The Blue Key To Meet Blue Key men's service honorary will hold a meeting on Monday March 8 in room 210 Kent hall at 10 p m Elections will be held for the offices of vice president and secretary
Four students Guisewite Greenwood Paulich and Higgins enter campus race for Most Popular Man and Woman to be decided March 11 in the atrium. Coalition candidates are Bill Guisewite and Ruth Greenwood with Pan Campus nominees Johan Paulich and Jane Higgins.
Senior class executive committee finalized plans for March 19 senior day events. A 10 a m assembly with seniors excused from classes, 11 a m commencement rehearsal, a 7 p m formal dinner, and a 10 p m formal dance are scheduled. Betty Chapman chairs the assembly committee with aides Marty Galloway Dorothy Strain Dick Clark and Charles Eyster. Mona Fletcher the new faculty adviser to the class approved, and the class voted to subscribe to the alumni paper. Wanda Baynes and Jean Marie Johnston will head gym entrance tables and seniors may pay dues at tables all week.
Seniors graduating in March are asked to meet in the University book store on Thursday March 18 for cap and gown measurements. Miss Mildred McCue, book store manager, says a two dollar fee for cap and gown and 30 cents for a white collar will be collected at that time.
Dr Frances Harshbarger announces that the American Women's Voluntary Services will recruit women for varied wartime roles including motor services stenography reception and clerical work air raid wardens and first aid training. The group will certify Red Cross courses and place women in welfare hospitals nurseries and local day care facilities with an all woman convocation planned. Assisting her are Bea Shaheen June Wagner and Audrey Wells.
Jean Burch a sophomore from Youngstown and Ted Tucker a junior from Akron were voted best girl and boy dates on campus in Gamma Sigma Phi sorority Penny Drive elections held yesterday. Runners up were Jean Lerner and Bill Whalen. The Gamma Sigs sponsor the drive again this year using the personal approach method today, per co chairs Jean Lenner and Gladys Willis. Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority will handle the drive next week for the third time this year.
Films about British war activities at home and on the front will end today from 4 to 5 p m in room 419 Mac Gilvrey hall. The collection was obtained via E J Bisker British consul and supports Business Administration 265. Ray Moran assistant instructor leads the display.
