Readers from DALE HAWK to DICK FIRTH express mixed views on compulsory military training for American youth. Opinions range from strong opposition as militaristic and undemocratic to support for optional or defensive instruction, highlighting neutrality and patriotism as key factors.
University hosts a five day Shore course in news photography drawing 68 Kent State students and participants from Ohio Michigan Pennsylvania West Virginia and Connecticut. Delegates include Ted Stromquist Ohio Oberlin Paul Schmick Ohio Wesleyan Ernest Wilde Cincinnati Russ Porter Westminster West Virginia students George Renkert Alliance Bob Gobrecht Columbiana and others from high schools and colleges across the region.
The Journalism student body will hold a meeting Monday afternoon at 4 o clock in room 112M. All journalism students are urged to attend for an important business discussion.
WADC Akron aired a false report claiming Kent State president emeritus J E McGilvrey faced ouster over legislature funding. Students and faculty denounced the lawmakers, later learning the broadcast was a history program joke about 1926 funding clashes.
H K Carpenter once led the Chestnut Burr and taught in Ohio. Now known as Ken Carpenter he is vice president of United Broadcasting and general manager of Cleveland radio stations WHK WCLE. He rose from Kent State to oversee WEAR WTAM and a Raleigh station before returning to Cleveland in 1934 to lead United Broadcasting.
Nearly 7 000 Ohio high school students converge on the university campus for the Eastern Ohio High School Speech league and Class B basketball tourney. About 100 visit for the first annual Eastern Ohio speech tournament while 13 teams compete in basketball from Portage Stark and Summit counties with Canton St John and North Canton contending for honors. Merle E. Wagoner estimates attendance around 1500 for the basketball events.
Dr. C. F. Rumold, Kent State University professor and head of the science department, will file his petition Monday with Summit County elections board to run as the Republican candidate for representative of the 14th congressional district. He is the sole announced contender so far, with a platform calling for labor justice, security for the elderly, relief from federal control, competition, and a guaranteed place for every American youth to become a creative producer.
Dean Mary L. Smallwood will speak on Leisure Time and Hobbies at the Off Campus Women's club meeting in Moulton Hall Monday at 8 p m. Each woman may bring her hobby to show how she spends leisure time. A short business meeting will follow to plan the 19th annual Pop Night on April 4.
Noted author Louis Bromfield Pulitzer prize winner will address Ohio college editors on April 24 at the university campus. Fred C. Kelly Peninsula writer will discuss freedom of the press. Norman Shaw Cleveland Press editor will speak on hiring qualities.
