Regatta crowns queen as Greek groups win events

The ninth annual Rowboat Regatta drew 1 500 spectators as Alpha Phi Beta Queen Joan Hammelsmith, sponsored by Alpha Phi Beta, was chosen after a parade of convertibles and a queen lineup. Oarsmen Steve Charnas and Louis Konstan led the independent men to victory. Mary Hoover and Phyllis Young won sorority honors for Delta Gamma. Kappa Sigma Chi’s Bill Blankenship and Don Radabaugh won the fraternity race amid a tight finish with Gamma Tau Delta’s Dave Richie and Chuck Warner. Phi Beta Phi beat Sigma Nu 4 3 in softball. entertainment by Newman and Gene Mekler capped the event.

Fraternity Regatta Winners and Queen Named

The Kappa Sigma Chi boat led by Bill Blankenship and Don Radabaugh won the race with Gamma Tau Delta second. Queen of the races Joan Hammersmith of Kent is pictured after being proclaimed queen. Delta Gamma won the sorority race with rowers Mary Hoover and Phyllis Young. Independent winners are Steve Charnas and Louis Konstan of Phi Sigma club.

Regatta Queenship Race Chooses Joan Hammersmith Winner

Five judges in a photo finish wrap up the Regatta beauty contest awarding the trophy to Joan Hammersmith of Alpha Phi Beta Kent. Other finalists include Doris McEntire Thelma Waddle Connie Colucci Pat Hess Betty Naugle Ruth Paul Wanda Harmon Nancy Crites Marilyn Greens Patt Hendryx and an anonymous late entry sponsored by Al Newman.

Ninth Annual Rowboat Regatta Ends After Triangular Course

Regatta judges presided while Dave McDowell started the race. A buoy drift forced a triangle course as sorority and fraternity groups competed. Regatta Queen Joan Hammersmith presented rotating trophies and Stater permanent trophies to winners. Each of the 10 entrants received a sailor doll. a sailboat clock door prize went to Chuck Anderson of Kent. Haywagons ferried tired students back to the university after the event.
